To expect a plastic water bottle to be dishwasher- proof?

DH bought himself a hard plastic water bottle from Tesco, but it has melted in the dishwasher. There is nothing on it to say it isn't dishwasher-proof. Would it be reasonable to expect a refund?

I’d expect it to say it WAS dishwasher proof rather than assume.

SunnyKlara · 15/02/2022 21:51

Nope. There are marks on plastics to say they are dishwasher proof. If it doesn't have one of those then you dishwasher wash it at your own risk I'm afraid

DropYourSword · 15/02/2022 21:51

Depends how it was labelled. If it was marked as dishwasher proof then of course yanbu. If it wasn't I don't understand why you'd request a refund.

Thewindwhispers · 15/02/2022 21:52

It’s handwash unless it says dishwasher proof

ChrissyPlummer · 15/02/2022 21:52

Ha! Happened to me with a cheap one, said it was dishwasher proof but shrank considerably Grin. It was only a couple of quid so I didn’t bother returning it. I’ve got a Contigo one now, but that has to be hand washed.

I would expect to check for symbols to say it's dishwasher safe and even if it says it is, I'd only wash on the top shelf of the dishwasher and not on the hottest setting either. An annoying amount of water bottles aren't dishwasher safe.

Interesting reactions. I know, of course, that things are usually labelled as dishwasher-proof, and if I was buying from a pound store I would probably check, but I wouldn't expect to have to check when buying from Tesco because their products are usually better quality. So, I'm tempted to return it anyway. Let's see.

Plastic melts.

JustWonderingIfYou · 15/02/2022 22:24

Haha, tesco better quality than poundland?!
It's a budget supermarket!

I'd think you were cheeky as its completely your own fault and no different to putting it in the microwave or oven and it melting. I expect they will refund you though just as goodwill gesture.

I check everything from cheap water bottles to expensive cast iron to make sure it has a dishwasher proof symbol before going in.

Safest to assume everything isnt until you check. Tesco might refund out of good will depending on who is on customer service that day and if they are feeling generous, but I would be too embarrassed to ask as I would feel like a numpty when they ask - did you check if it was dishwasher proof?
