Panicking a little bit

DH carried the bin through the living room to the front door (wheelie bins are outside the front door). In the bag was raw eggs that were 2 days out of date.

The eggs had obviously broken and were leaking through a hole in the bag all through the living room.

Anyway.. before we realised this, DS (10 months) was crawling all over the floor, putting his hands in his mouth etc.
Im just worried about the risk of food poisoning here. Especially because the eggs were previously refrigerated and were in the bin for a good 7-8 hours.

Am I worrying over nothing? I'm pretty sure that he crawled over to that area where the egg path was 🙈

I’m sure it will be fine, try not to worry, xx

Itsalmostanaccessory · 15/02/2022 21:32

Eggs 2 days out of date are very rarely actually out of date. You didnt need to throw them out at all.

Eggs that have been out of the fridge for 7 or 8 hours are not dangerous. Not in the UK.

It's absolutely fine.

In future, you can check if eggs are still good by dropping them in a jug of water. If they sink relatively quickly then they're good. If they sink really slowly or float then their bad (air bubble has built up inside as it has gone off).

Bigtruth · 15/02/2022 21:33

Absolutely nothing to worry about. British eggs are incredibly safe these days.

As for the eggs. If they were otherwise looking ok prior to being binned, there's absolutely no reason to bin eggs two days after their use by date.

Stick em in a bowl of tap water, if they sink, they're good. They'll last month's in a fridge.

FluffyBooBoo · 15/02/2022 21:33

Are you in the UK? Eggs don't need to be refrigerated here. It'll be fine.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 15/02/2022 21:35

*they're not their. Why does my phone keep doing this!?! Almost every time, it changes it to their!

gamerchick · 15/02/2022 21:37

Eggs don't go out of date that quick. It's a waste to chuck them.

Put it out of your head

blankittyblank · 15/02/2022 21:38

We never keep our eggs in the fridge and keep them way over the out of date, date.

You can tell when you break them if they're off, and honestly, I've never had an off egg, and I always store them like this! It'll be absolutely fine (and you really don't need to be so gung-ho about throwing them out next time 🙂)

Nazz10 · 15/02/2022 21:52

@Itsalmostanaccessory thank you! And thank you for the tip! Will definitely use that next time. And thanks to @Bigtruth too

@FluffyBooBoo yes I am in the UK. I know they don't need to be in the fridge but we always have done. Even when I was growing up, my mum would always put them in the fridge. Not quite sure why though 🤔🤷🏽‍♀️ I think maybe it's because we used to live in the US and they have them in the fridge there don't they. I don't think we would have any space to put them in the kitchen other than the fridge door actually

@gamerchick I was more concerned that the eggs had been out at room temperature for 7-8 hours than them being off. I'm sure we would have smelt them if they were off anyway

@blankittyblank thanks! I'm going to see if I can rearrange the kitchen a bit to have an egg basket on the side instead

I think eggs are fine up to 4 weeks over the date.

And eggs don’t need to be refrigerated.

I can guarantee the floor has more normal germs on that the eggs.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/02/2022 21:54

God I never check the date on eggs! I just keep using them up til they run out. Sometimes we have a box on the go for weeks.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/02/2022 22:06

You are worrying over nothing. Smile

Most people in Uk keep eggs at room temp all the times. They are perfectly fine a couple weeks over date

Me too. I do put them in the fridge though.
Workin8til6 · 15/02/2022 22:11

YABU for chucking out perfectly good eggs.
Your DS will be fine though.

TheHoptimist · 15/02/2022 22:14

Stick him in a bowl of water- if he floats the eggs were off
(or that may be the test for eggs when not already inside a child)

Pucarbuile · 15/02/2022 22:18

The older the eggs the better for making pavlova Smile you would without a doubt know if the eggs were off, the smell is atrocious.

LittleOwl153 · 15/02/2022 22:18

The fridge thing is actually about keeping them at a constant temperature... rather than any particular temperature.

FluffyBooBoo · 15/02/2022 22:31

I want telling you that they didn't need to be kept in the fridge to give your storage info. It was basically to say that you have no need to worry. You are concerned that they'll suddenly be toxic because they have been out of the fridge for 8 hours when two days out of date. I've used eggs months out of date. Honestly, your ds will be fine.

LakieLady · 15/02/2022 22:33

I never knew that about old eggs!

No wonder my meringues are a bit hit and miss.
