Drinking alcohol regularly, sometimes bingeing, for thirty years

Sometimes I've gone through months of binge nights out, other times I've drank a bottle of wine per night for a week at a time with a few days break, when
Life was very tough.
I worry about liver damage so I've decided to stop using alcohol as an emotional
Crutch and enjoy it at weekends or
Special occasions from now on.
AIBU to think the damage is done and how would
You know?

I'm so sorry to hear this.

Acknowledging there's an issue is the first step to dealing with it.

The way you find out is to see your GP and get some blood tests done to check on how well your liver is working now, and prospects for it recovering in the future.

They won't be shocked or embarass you. They will have seen it all before. And, if you want, they can help you access support.

My Dad died of cirrhosis. He literally went from compensated to decompensated liver when doing his shopping. Downhill for a few months then, bedridden. He died of Heptorenal syndrome. If your liver is not decompensated then you still have a chance to repair it. If you stop now.

Thanks.
I've always had regular bloods done and they've always been ok.
Ive used alcohol to bury problems and
Avoid dealing with various griefs throughout my life. I've had many. Now I need to go it alone.
It has done its job but now it needs to go and be used for what it's intended for ... enjoyment not abuse.

I don't understand that@Grenoble124 . Can you please explain?

Just in case I wasn't clear, I wasn't bingeing every night for months at a time but it could be two/ three nights per week per month.

I think go and see your GP and explain your concerns, livers have a good chance of recovering and it’ll put your mind to rest.

I found high fat low carb diet very much helped. Also, liver repairs itself. Good luck OP

surprisesurprises · 15/02/2022 22:00

High fat? Really?? I thought that would be hard on the liver?
I eat too much Fat anyway! How did it help?
I'm taking a bit b complex, lots of milk thistle and vit d capsule to support myself to get going.

Liver damage rarely shows symptoms in the early stages and blood tests are not always an accurate picture . The only way to detect early damage at the reversible stage is by fibro scan . Damage at later stages when symptoms are evident is irreversible .
Once cirrhosis is evident the body can “ compensate “ for a time but not reverse the damage . If you carry on drinking at this stage the body will quickly stop compensating and that’s referred to as “ decompensated liver failure “
Lots of support on the alcohol board . Good luck

Have a read of ‘the joys of being sober’ it’s good for giving you a different perspective on drinking alcohol.

Liver problems don’t show up in bloods in the early stages all the time.
