To ask how to get clothes clean without using biological?

I get severe skin rashes if I use biological washing powder, so I use non-bio.

But I've got white clothes and sheets with stains on them I can't get out (mascara mostly), and dresses that will still smell of cigarettes or wine or whatever if I've been to a party (and not from me smoking - from talking outside to people who are, or from a glass of wine or lager or whatever being spilt on the table). I end up needing to put things through the washing machine multiple times.

I tried biological on some whites with stains last year and the clothes were gleaming, and then they gave me a rash that took months to shift. Anyone else in the same boat that's found a washing powder that's non-bio but actually cleans clothes? I'm currently using Fairy, having been told by my doctor it was best for 'curing' the self inflicted rash.

I use Surcare Laundry Liquid or Wilko's liquid soap flakes for woollens. Wash at 40 degrees minimum. I just treat stains with Vanish asap, but hate the smell. Don't really have any whites.

Can't stand heavily perfumed washing powder or liquid.

Changing the detergent won’t get stains like mascara out, they’re clinging on. You need to work them out before go in machine, the heat of washing will cook them in. I use any cheap soap or liquid wash with cold water to get out before putting wash - works for poonamis, tomato stains and anything else. You can get things like a laundry brush. The washing machine is more for general washing and lifting oils and smells, the pre work needs to be done for stains unfortunately.

I knead between my hands, but you can laundry brushes. Best one I had came with some hand wash laundry detergent, the cap had dots on it so worked the fabric but didn’t damage it.

For the smells - how do you dry? If I’m tumbler same thing again of cooking it in. Can you air on a line before washing or hang up on hanger by open window?

I use Fairy and have never had any issues with clothes smelling of smoke or woodsmoke after one wash.

Any stains I soak and then use Vanish on (the bar directly on the stain, the inwash powder I find completely useless). I wash my sheets on 60 and don't have stains on those either (I tend to find taking mascara off before I go to bed helps as well).

Switch to a tubing mascara?

You’d need to try it to see if it works for your skin but I get most stains out with a little pre-treat with black Marseille liquid soap. It’s about the consistency of washing-up liquid. I do use bio but the black Marseille soap works wonders on greasy marks or oil.

It's usually the fragrances in the washing powder and not the enzymes that cause rashes. This is why other countries don't have "non bio" options as widely as we do. Their sensitive/baby options simply have less fragrance etc. Non bio options are marketed towards sensitive skin so unsurprisingly tend to less irritants across the board. I've heard that some supermarket own brand bio powders are better on that front. Make sure you are rinsing stuff thoroughly and not using fabric softeners or other fragranced stuff.

look for low/no fragrance bio powders

Use washing powder not liquid for whites.
Always use a hot wash - bath and bed linen on 60° or 90° washes.
Vanish Power Gel is brilliant for pre treating stains - gets put those pesky mascara marks too.
When pre treating stains soak with cold water.
Dry outside in the sun as much as possible.

Get mascara off clothes with make up remover before you wash.

MaizeAmaze · 15/02/2022 20:10

Powder, not liquid. Not on a eco setting.
Whites at 60.
Hang outside, unless pissing it down.

NoToLandfill · 15/02/2022 20:23

Gosh don't use fairy! It is so scented it's unbelievable!

Start off with running a washing machine really hot wash with washing machine cleaner in it, at 90 or at least 60 degrees.

Then try an eco brand- ecover or splosh do good washing liquid in non-bio.

What temp are you washing at? Go for 40 degrees, and an extra/longer rinse.

I make a solution of
1 part liquid glycerine (from a chemists)
2 parts washing up liquid
3 parts water

which works on all kinds of stains. Spray it on, rub it in then wash. I use a non-scented biological liquid, no conditioner and always use an extra rinse option.
My DS had childhood exczema and this regime was fine for all his clothes and washable nappies when he was a baby.
