To expect a barber to be able to cut my sons hair like this?

I had a fantastic barber who used to cut my sons hair exactly how it suited him. She used to call it "a proper boys haircut". It was scissor cut, nice and neat round the sides and back and long and floppy on top, with a fringe. Sadly she closed her barbers shop recently.

All other barbers I have taken him to have listened to what I describe, looked at pictures of what I want and then clippered it really short round the sides, cut the top too short and cut in a harsh, straight, short fringe.

I have tried 3 different barbers and ended up with the same. Am I describing it wrong? What would you ask for? Is it perhaps that my old barber also cut womens hair? Do I need to take him to a hairdressers for this style?

First 2 photos I attached are what I want. Final one is what I end up with.

Yes,a hairdresser is what you need.

My barber does the same haircut and uses exactly the same phrase "a proper boy's haircut". It must be a thing.

I used to take my two to the barbers attached to the hairdressers. We had to wait for one chap to do both as he had hairdressing training and could do it with scissors. The other guy just used clippers.

We now go to a hairdressers with a mini-home salon as with DS1's sensory issues, it wasn't pleasant having so much prolonged hanging around and not worth the cheaper barber's prices.

Society seems to have gone ultra critical on boys' hair length having to be particularly short. It suits some but not all. DS1 has sprouty hair with cows licks and crowns and if it's not long and heavy enough to make it cooperate with gravity, he just looks like a dilapidated toilet brush.

My nearest town has a half dozen barbers and the boys coming out all have the same haircut. Clippers definitely used.

Hairdressers will be better for what you want but expect to pay more.

Just thought, it’s lovely she may be tall, I would let her know she is very lucky. No offence meant to all the shorter folks.

Sorry wrong thread!

I used to tell the hairdressers to cut shaggy layers like a surfer. Nothing too short.

tokyo1 · 15/02/2022 11:57

I had the opposite problem. My DCs hair is very curly and unruly (lovely really) but wanted it done with clippers and shorter just so it was neater. He likes to wipe his food in his hair lol. Hairdresser just trimmed it abit and I asked for more off but she barely cut anything off. When I got him home it was barely like it'd been cut. No one noticed. So this time I took him to a barbers who used clippers and it looks great. So I think you need a hairdressers if you want that floppy hair kind of look.

We gave uo and bought our own clippers - same issue double crown wth DS and what ever we said came out with clippers having been used.

Mind you I cut my own hair at weekend - whatever I say I get the same bloddy cut and as it is curly it's always much shorter than I asked for. Looks exactly like it would if I'd gone to hardressers but has length I want.

JustWonderingIfYou · 15/02/2022 12:04

Go to a hairdresser. Scissors only!

Little boys always look chavvy and rough when shaved with clippers.

SoItWas · 15/02/2022 12:06

It's hard to find a barber that can do a decent scissor cut. I just tried a new place every time with ds, until I found a lady who went "ahh, so he wants to look like a wee surfer dude", and cut it just how he wanted. We've stuck with her since. She never remembers ds, but as soon as I say, "surfer dude", she nods sagely and cuts it perfectly.

RuthW · 15/02/2022 12:15

They look the same haircut to me (ex hairdresser). The first ones look like it needs cutting to me.

collieresponder88 · 15/02/2022 12:20

Yes they have taken it too short at the sides

Okbye · 15/02/2022 12:32

Oh my god I feel your pain OP!!

It seems like no hairdresser or barber can get my son's hair right, even if I show them an old pic (when he did have a good cut - person has now moved out of the county) of how I want it. It's NEVER RIGHT and I've taken him to SO many places trying to find 'the one' (lol) to no avail 😭😭😭

It's so annoying! 🤬

avocadotofu · 15/02/2022 12:42

I totally agree with you I wouldn't like the hair in the third picture at all! I take my son to my hairdresser for this reason.

AncientWhitedogpoop · 15/02/2022 13:24

Yes OP we have this too. My DS's hair was exactly like the first two pics and always neat and really suited him. The salon closed and we tried two different barbers and both times like your last pictures.
The cut doesn't last as long and grows out in a strange shape and every morning when he wakes up it is sticking up everywhere. Never used to happen before. I feel your pain too!

Pythonesque · 15/02/2022 13:27

I'm another who doesn't like ultra short cuts on boys. I learnt to my cost not to cut DS's hair too short on top as it stood straight up if you did. Now he's a teenager they usually clipper the sides and back but still finish the top with scissors I think.

Butteredtoast55 · 15/02/2022 13:57

I tend to think hair grows out and a bad cut will be fine in a few days but I'd have been livid with that cut!
Definitely opt for a hairdressers and don't let them get the clippers out. His hair is lovely longer and I hope you set a trend away from these silly 'peaky blinder' cuts that look horrible on children.
