To think there's a link - shortening menstrual cycles and covid vaccine?

HelpMeHiveMind · 15/02/2022 07:02

I want to be clear im in no way advocating that people should not get the vaccine.

I have another post in Health, where I was actually wondering if this could be peri menopause (I'm late 30s) and maybe it still is. Periods moving forward by a week or so each time and have done for about the last 5 cycles.

But others started responding that they too have experienced this since their covid vaccines, I've looked online a bit more and found others saying the same. Yet all the "official studies" I can find just talk about a temporary short lived (eg 1 or 2 cycles) change and generally refer to different length cycles, not them moving forward.

I'm just wondering how many others have experienced this, what the implications are, when / if it went back to normal and why there aren't more studies about it - or maybe there are and I've not found them? Or, are there lots of late 30s / early 40s ladies starting peri menopause at the moment (possibly completely unrelated to vaccines)?

Have you been to your GP about it?

drpet49 · 15/02/2022 07:06

No there is no official or credible research supporting your theory.

JustBlethering · 15/02/2022 07:08

They've moved forward by a week each time for the last 5 cycles? How is that possible or do you mean a day or so each time and now it's a week after 5 cycles?

I'd think it's peri menopause but I'd go to the doctors to discuss anyway.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/02/2022 07:09

I thought this initially, but I track my periods in a calendar and realised they’ve actually been getting shorter since before I was vaccinated, so total coincidence. I suspect that’s the case with many people, but if you don’t actively track, there seems to be a correlation where there isn’t.

Unpopular37 · 15/02/2022 07:10

Just as a point of interest, we are born with 'x' amount of eggs (without wanting to cause a meltdown, I am talking about biological females), thus we will have 'x' amount of periods. The younger you start mentruating, the younger you will have your (natural) menopause...

BeHereNowx32 · 15/02/2022 07:10

@HelpMeHiveMind my cycles have shortened by about 4/5 days. And have been very light after my vaccines and booster. I’m 35. I definitely don’t think I’m peri menopausal. It seems like too much of a coincidence. Will see when my period starts to turn up this month.
Hope things settle down for you.

HelpMeHiveMind · 15/02/2022 07:11

@drpet49 you are absolutely correct from what I have seen. So I definitely want to be clear to anyone reading that this is not a "thing", it is purely personal experience and that of SOME others who have responded / I've read about- not the majority. There is no credible research behind this. I am just interested to hear if others are experiencing the same link.

Yes I will be seeing my GP but they currently aren't taking appointments except for emergencies and this isn't considered one so i have a long wait.

My cycle changed after the vaccine but willing to accept it’s a coincidence! I had continuous bleeding for a month, then three-week cycles, and now I haven’t had a period for over five weeks. GP thought it could be peri-menopause. The timings were interesting though, regular as clockwork leading up to first vaccine.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 15/02/2022 07:22

I haven't had the booster. But since the vaccines my cycles are a full week shorter. It's massive. I always seem to be having a period or having PMT.

Ohbuggeritsme · 15/02/2022 07:23

I've had 3 periods since my jabs/booster a year ago. One was really heavy for about 3-4 days and the other two barely noticeable.
I was regular as clockwork until I had my jabs, I've always tracked my periods.
Doctor has said I'm perimenopausal, so could be a massive coincidence 🤔 I've read an awful lot about womens' cycles altering significantly since having the vaccinations though

YellowbellyLass · 15/02/2022 07:24

It's something I noticed too tbh, my period was 3 /4 days late this month but looking back at my tracker it was probably back to where it usually would be.

MargaretThursday · 15/02/2022 08:06

I'm like others. My period has been getting shorter and shorter, but from before I had the vaccines, from about a year ago. I'm fairly certain it's menopause due to age. I also remember one of dm's friends having the same 30 years ago.

Incidentally I also know someone who has had continual bleeding since they had covid in the first wave. Again in their case likely to be the menopause. They also have long covid.

Mirrorball2022 · 15/02/2022 08:09

Mine have gotten longer or are late some months but I’m nearly 43 and I think it’s more related to peri as I’ve noticed other symptoms too.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 15/02/2022 08:11

I am 50. Post jabs and booster my period was 3 weeks late every time. And very heavy. And I felt like crap.

Decaffe · 15/02/2022 08:12

Yes, that vast majority of report about this state that the vaccine lengthened cycles.

For me, the full cycle immediately after each jab, was made shorter. One cycle was 23 days, absolutely unheard of for me!

Kayjay2018 · 15/02/2022 08:15

I believe that the EMA are now reviewing all data around the vaccine and menstrual issues again

www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-7-10-february-2022

About halfway down the page in the link it says they are having another look at all the data, which I think can only be a good thing. If people are reporting issues the concerns should be looked at, data reviewed and analysed and their findings published whatever they say.

Rowgtfc72 · 15/02/2022 08:16

I'm 5 or 6 days early for the last 6 or 7 cycles. I'm definitely peri but still on the pill so my periods have been regular. Until after my second jab.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 15/02/2022 08:20

Not had a period since March 2020. Had lots of symptoms of peri menopause after
I have covid and 3 vaccinations. 2nd dose of covid in January.
Yesterday morning I had a period. Literally gone by late afternoon and nothing so far today.
I no longer have reflux, palpitations , dry skin, sweats or a fanny drier than the Sahara.
That one I can't work out.
Global exercise in birth control? I can come up with many scenarios all wackier than the next.

HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 15/02/2022 08:24

Yes, mine were affected and it can't be coincidence imo. The first one I had my period when I had the jab, and the next period was 3 weeks late. The second jab was mid cycle and my period started a week early (normally had a longer cycle ie not 28 days)
It was then a couple of days shorter up until the booster and since then I've been down to a 28/29 day cycle.
All the women I work with had similar issues. There were a couple of pregnancy scares because of late periods after the first vaccine.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 15/02/2022 08:26

Mine got worse - longer, heavier and more painful.

liveforsummer · 15/02/2022 08:29

I don't have periods, I take the mini pill and it has reliably stopped them for years up until the day after my first vaccine and since have had irregular bleeding ever since. A complete pain as always happens when out and about. A friend of mine was similar and had an incredibly heavy period after 2 years of nothing. Not sure why people are happy to accept its a coincidence when it really doesn't seem to be.

WouldIBeATwat · 15/02/2022 08:29

We are born with 1-2 million eggs. We’d each need to have cycles for between 77,000 and 154,000 years by your reckoning. Confused
HighlandCowbag · 15/02/2022 08:30

Mines been weird as well. First vaccine had an early period, a late period, another early one then it settled down. 2nd vac didn't have an impact. Booster was while on period. Next one was a week early, then 3 weeks later bled for 5 days, stopped for 2/3 days, spotting for 10 days then a 10 day period. Also had covid about 4 weeks after booster so who the fuck knows. Possibly peri, am 44 so dunno.

labyrinthlaziness · 15/02/2022 08:31

@drpet49

No there is no official or credible research supporting your theory.
This.

If you think about the ages of people who are reporting these type of changes - it is just coincidence - people are linking everything that happens to them to the vaccine.

Correlation is not causation.

JakeyRolling · 15/02/2022 08:35

My cycles have gotten longer since the vaccine (I track using an app so can pinpoint it to then).
I also got my second dose while on my period. The one after that was the worst I've ever had in my life - I use one of the larger cups and even on my heaviest days I don't fill it but this time for three days (until I could get to the doctor) I was flooding it within 2-3 hours.

It might be under researched, but many things relating to women's health - and especially menstruation - are.
