After all the bad press and seemingly institutional racism, sexism and homophobia we have seen coming from the Met over the past few years, I can't help but feel that the Police Federation declaring they have "no faith" in Sadiq Kahn just completely tone deaf and missing the point? It's all tit for tat rather than accepting the need for change. I at least expected them to play lip service to it!

Totally.

KateTheEighth · 14/02/2022 15:01

Absolutely agree with you

ClaudineClare · 14/02/2022 15:01

I meant it is totally tone deaf, not that YA totally BU!

MrsPear · 14/02/2022 15:03

What do expect them say? If you are not white mc then you would know what a nasty bunch of narcissistic power tripping people they are - my children are always told head down and never trust. They will never change.

Classica · 14/02/2022 15:04

What a pissy little baby. They really don't get it.

ClaudineClare · 14/02/2022 15:05

"She was reforming. She was changing. The culture is changing"

She has had five years to change the culture, why is it only now beginning to change.

"We are deeply disappointed with the actions of the mayor."

But not deeply disappointed with the actions of police officers?

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 14/02/2022 15:05

Yes, completely.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 14/02/2022 15:08

Just heard the head on the radio saying Sadiq khan had said unfair things about his colleagues. Seriously though, if it ain't you then it ain't about you.

CorrBlimeyGG · 14/02/2022 15:16

Congratulations to the Police Federation for weaponising the far right even further.

The vast majority of comments supporting the Federation on social media are from fascists, who hate Sadiq Khan for his faith.

AvocadoParsnip · 14/02/2022 15:30

YANBU

MorningStarling · 14/02/2022 15:32

I think the Police Federation are wrong, at the end of the day they're unhappy that they are having to change their culture at a faster rate than they're comfortable with.

I agree it's good Dick has been forced out, if she had any honour she would have resigned at the time of one of her serious failings and errors of judgement, for example allowing an off duty officer to abduct and murder a random woman.

The thing is though, Khan has to shoulder much of the blame too. If he'd had any sense he would have forced Dick out long before now. The failures of rank and file policemen are Dick's failings, but Dick's failings are Khan's failings.

Some of his cock-ups are just expensive and irritating, like his dismantling of the transport system, but others are tragic such as the Everard murder.

As Sir Kier Starmer has said, the man at the top is the man whose head should be on the block, and if Khan had any decency he'd be out the door along with Dick.

Oh yeah, they know exactly what they're doing and the type of person who will be in gleeful agreement with them.

The Sarah Everard murder is the Mayor's 'cock up'? You're going to have to explain this one to us.

My understanding was that central government funding was withheld from TFL because Boris hates Sadiq and that's why transport in London suffered.

blacksax · 14/02/2022 15:40

They are really not reading the room, are they?

Poetrypatty · 14/02/2022 15:41

YANBU. The first step for the Met to change is for them to recognise what they're doing wrong, and they seem so far away from that at the moment.

That, plus the previous mayor agreed to the government no longer providing an operating grant to TfL. That mayor was called Boris Johnson.

From the article:
“Mr Marsh said that remarks made by the mayor had "undermined the professional, dedicated and incredibly difficult work of tens of thousands of hard-working and brave police officers from across the capital".“

It’s not Khan’s remakes that have undermined the police, it’s the actions of police officers. They sound completely whiny “if you say that some police officers have done the wrong thing, then people won’t like us and it’s all your fault!”
Completely focusing on the wrong thing.

RedWingBoots · 14/02/2022 15:49

@blacksax

Well I'm waiting with bated breath for someone senior in the National or Met Black Police Association to agree with him....

I am white mc and am well aware thanks. Sadly learnt not to trust the Police in my teens - of course I've had easy compared with if I had been a POC etc but they sure let me know what they were about when I was younger.
ClaudineClare · 14/02/2022 15:51

If Khan should have gone, then so should Patel. The Met Commissioner is accountable to the Mayor and the Home Secretary and both have a role in the appointment of the Met Commissioner.

TruffleShuffles · 14/02/2022 16:00

The irony of claiming a lack of faith in Khan when completely ignoring the complete lack of faith in them by the general public who are the people they serve.

Absolutely. I’m sick of hearing how much Dick was revered by Met officers. I want them to be led by someone who’ll sort them out and who some of them won’t like much.
DePfeffoff · 14/02/2022 16:14

YANBU. No-one cares whether the police federation has faith in Sadiq Khan, he's the elected mayor and they have to put up with it. If they had any sense they would be worried about the extent to which the public have lost faith in the police, especially the Met.

DePfeffoff · 14/02/2022 16:18

Some of his cock-ups are just expensive and irritating, like his dismantling of the transport system, but others are tragic such as the Everard murder.

The only dismantling of the transport system that has happened is the direct result of underfunding by the government. But generally it's definitely improved since Johnson's day. And the only possible culpability Khan has in relation to Sarah Everard lies in not having got rid of Dick sooner.
