To ask teacher to correct report?

Just that really. Got DS's mid year report (he's 6) and it says his maths target is to learn to count to twenty and say and write the numbers.

He can already do this? He's really quite a little whiz in maths, he can add, subtract, multiply, divide, spot a pattern, plot a line on a basic graph... count to twenty? Really?

They've got readings and writing targets right, so I assume it's not just a generic report. I'm confused because at parents evening his class teacher said he was impressed with his maths and he was really far ahead.

Should I ask the teacher why that's his maths target? Or do teachers hate it when parents do this? If it was something like learning times tables I'd get it, but counting to twenty is something he could do before he even started school.

@UpDownRound I've used software for primary, with banks of statements. Just wicker to write your own paragraphs, to be honest. A load of click-y faff!

To the pp who said schools lower reception targets to make themselves look good - the OPs son is in Year 1. So your comment was unwarranted (and untrue).

I'd just ignore. It's not like anyone else will look at his school report at 6 years

Soontobe60 · 14/02/2022 20:24

@Thewindwhispers

It has nothing to do with your child- schools like to make bright kids look dumb on paper in the early years so they can triumphantly show Ofsted how much progress they’ve made at the school by year six.
Rubbish! Ofsted don’t even look at the reports, nor do they look at internal data
rosegoldwatcher · 14/02/2022 20:28

So many people just make up what goes on in schools on MN!

@UpDownRound - that may be true. However, as a secondary school teacher (retired) of many decades I have used many a report writing program.
My Dc's reports at Primary school were also suspiciously compu-written.

YANBU to ask to speak to the teacher about the target, make sure it was a mistake and that there's no reason to worry. You want to make sure your child's teacher knows what he is capable of and what he needs to work on next.

YABU if you ask for the report to be changed. That's unnecessary admin and a waste of the teacher's time (time better spent on planning).

I don't doubt some primaries use software (although I would imagine the majority do not) - what I objected to was the absolute certainty from a pp that that is what had happened. Just a poster making it up and stating it as fact as usual 😂

RandomDent · 14/02/2022 20:36

Does she mean write them in words?

gingerbiscuits · 14/02/2022 20:59

@Fritilleries

Probably a copy/paste error. It happens.
I agree. Simple mistake. Just politely query it. No big deal. Teachers have to churn out 30+ reports & sometimes will copy across targets if/when they apply to more than 1 child.

It's happened to me with my children. I just leave them to it. I assume it's for bodging purposes.
