To want to question the doctors decision after my waters broke

Hey everyone

Currently 36 weeks pregnant and my waters broke 5 days ago. As the baby is in breech position I will need a csection.
After my waters broke it was decided that it's too early to have the baby and so I was put on antibiotics (to avoid infection) for 10 days!
Had a scan and the baby shows at 7lbs 9 Atm ... not sure I'm happy with this decision to be on antibiotics and risk infection. Also my baby is left without water in there. Really unsure how to feel about it. Could I have the baby sooner? I'm not happy with this decision but it seems that I have no say .. no one has asked me if I'm happy to carry on without my waters and it's just making me sooo anxious
Anyone else been though this?

You absolutely should be involved in making the decisions regarding your care, if you are not happy ask to speak to another Reg or consultant. Ask them to explain risks/benefits/alternatives to waiting or performing a CS now.

Your baby won't be in there without water though, it does regenerate! The doctors should have explained this. It's good you are on antibiotics.

Are you at home now?

You should definitely be involved in the decision so ask them. Is it possible they’re waiting for a csection slot? When my waters broke I was told it could be several days wait due to emergency sections taking priority.

And just to reassure you about your waters, mine went 4 days before DD was born and she was fine, they do replenish. Are you in hospital and being monitored? You should be if your waters have already gone and you’re breech.

It’s important to know that size of baby does not equate to maturity. So a well grown baby who is pre term can struggle significantly with breathing and feeding. As mentioned above the fluid does continue to be produced.

Try to enjoy the rest and get ready to meet your baby very soon. I’m sure you have instructions on watching for infection and reduced movements.

I'm not medical and have no real knowledge, so this is purely anecdotal, but I am surprised they've decided to leave baby in there for so long because of the risk of infection etc. My waters broke at 35 weeks exactly. I was kept in hospital on antibiotics and induced the next day as I was told at this stage it was much safer for him to be born. Wasn't even given steroids as they deemed that he'd been cooking long enough not to need them. He was born at 35+2 weighing 6lbs11. We had a week in the neonatal unit on kangaroo care and then were sent home. He was absolutely fine, bar jaundiced and lacking a suckle reflex at first, and is now a healthy, happy 3 year old.

I did find that communication was really lacking around the decisions they were making and I had to be VERY pushy to get any kind of answers. It shouldn't be that way but it seems to be a thing in maternity care across the country. In your position, I would also be concerned and I wouldn't feel worried about asking quite strongly why they're making this decision and expressing your concerns and don't feel embarrassed about persisting if you don't feel reassured by their answers.

I hope all is well and your baby is here, happy and healthy, soon.

When my waters went at 35 weeks I was offerd to go home on anti biotics and come back to be induced at 37 weeks or get steroids and be induced the following day as it turns out baby had there own plan as I give birth an hour later while waiting to get steroids. I know it's different needing c section but you should still have a choice

Thanks everyone.
I've been at home since my waters broke. When I was asking questions about the risks vs the benefits of having the baby straight after my waters broke .. he laughed at me and my DH and said they know better & no one will perform a csection at this stage if labour hasn't started so I was sent home for 10 days ... not been checked since and just told to watch out for signs of infection 😫
Called them this morning to say it's been 5 days and I'm a little anxious now as I don't want to risk an infection and would rather have baby sooner .. was told NO and we will discuss the plan at the end of the antibiotics session 😔
