My attempt this morning was abysmal again.

I just boil shallow water in a small frying pan, no vinegar, swirl it round a bit before sliding the egg in (I break it on to a saucer) simmer until I can tell that the white is firm. If necessary I spoon hot water over the top so it’s pink not yellow - I loathe uncooked egg white.

I don’t care if the white isn’t ‘tidy’.

I did have silicon pouches from Lakeland but IMO they were more trouble than they were worth.

It doesn't matter whether I use a non-stick or stainless steel pan, if it's shallow I always get bits of egg white stuck to the bottom - really hard to get off as well. Praps greasing the bottom is the answer.

Easy. Gary Usher way.

BIG pan of water boiling. Freshest eggs you can find - crack them in and cook for 3 minutes. Absolutely perfect every time :)

Links to his way of doing scrambled for anyone who wants a hand with those too - maybe don’t listen if you’re sensitive to swearing 🤣

I was just going to recommend them. Brilliant.

Perfect poached is eggs is what I consider to be my most successful lesson from lockdown.. kidding obv but I did manage to perfect them 🤣

Boil a pot of water until fully boiling, turn down to lowest heat, wait for bubbles to stop then drop the egg in, couple of mins and you will have the perfect poached egg.

I started doing soft boiled eggs for ramen and have now started doing them in place of poached, peeled on toast as I'm less likely to ruin them.
Eggs in a pan of cold water, once starts boiling set a timer for 4.5 mins for medium egg, 5 mins large. Peel gently and cut into once on the toast so you don't lose any runny yolk 😉

CasperGutman · 24/02/2022 22:05

If you just want one poached egg, fill a mug with boiling water from the kettle, crack a very fresh egg in and microwave on full power for forty seconds.

You might have to tweak the timing slightly depending on the power of the microwave and size of egg.

I find this works pretty well. The eggs are constrained in the mug and can't spread out into the water as they could in a large saucepan.

SnozPoz · 24/02/2022 22:12

Don't use cold eggs. Ideally they should be as fresh as possible. Crack egg into a small bowl. Bring pan of water, with pinch of salt and splash of vinegar in it, to the boil, once boiling turn down to a simmer and pour the egg into the water. Flick the hot water over the egg with a spatula until the yolk has a white film over it and the white is solid. Remove with slotted spatula or spoon

I've perfected poached eggs! My extremely fussy dd declared mine are the best she has tasted.

  1. crack 2 eggs into a mug
  2. boil water in a pan with a splash of vinegar. Once boiling turn down the heat so it is gently bubbling and stir the water so it spins fast. Gently add the eggs and cook for 3 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove and drain.

I don't eat eggs myself Grin

Whateveryouwant1 · 24/02/2022 22:56

I have a hen that lays the most perfect eggs for poaching. She's a white star and lays medium size white eggs. They are very compact so poach beautifully. Not so great for frying tho!
Ps boiling water, add egg, remove with a spoon when it feels springy to the touch.

GrowingUpIsATrap · 24/02/2022 23:47

Mine usually work out great. This is what i do:
Bring pan of water to boil
When it gets close to boiling, start toast
When it boils, reduce water to lowest possible heat, make a whirlpool in the middle with a big spoon and crack one egg into it. Give it a few seconds for the egg to settle, then bang the heat back up (if you have an electric hob then just remove the pan from the heat while you to the whirlpool/egg dropping)
Butter the toast
Once the egg starts to float up, its usually ready. If, once you start to lift out the egg, it still looks a bit undercooked, just gently lower the spoon back in for about 10 seconds.

This seems to work for me!

Boiling water in saucepan
Break egg into a small sieve like for tea leaves over a cup
Carefully tip egg from sieve into boiling water
Time for 2 mins 20 secs
Lift out with slotted spoon and dab on kitchen paper to remove excess water
