To sell household goods, furniture, baby stuff in bulk?

We’re moving abroad and have a lot of household stuff, like white goods, clothes, baby things, furniture and other bits we would like to sell. Do you know of any companies which buy such things in bulk?

We don’t have time to sell things individually on ebay and it isn’t worth it for heavy items usually anyway. We’re not that well off to donate all of our stuff.

Is it a bad idea to try and sell in bulk or have you heard of any companies which could do this? Thanks!

No idea but just to say I found it near of impossible to sell baby stuff, people either buy new or want free

Have you tried Facebook market place? It's free, cash on collection. I have had some good things from there.
You do have to be realistic over prices, have a look.

munchmom · 13/02/2022 11:19

Yes, i thought so… even charities around here don’t take any baby stuff, quite strangely

Can you do a big garage sale? Advertise it locally and just put everything up for grabs at once. You won’t make much but it’s better than dealing with selling one thing at a time.

munchmom · 13/02/2022 11:21

I had a look at FB, but didn’t seem like the place to just sell in bulk, it’s a lot of hassle to do individual ads, negotiate etc. We really don’t have time for that and would just like a simple solution.

A garage sale sounds like a fun thing, i was thinking of that but literally never saw any around us. I’m not sure if neighbours would appreciate it.

There are house clearance firms but you really won't get much. Facebook market place is your best bet if you need the money but you will have to probably take some time to list items. You could list things together- ie bedroom furniture sets though?

munchmom · 13/02/2022 11:43

Might not be able to avoid Fb marketplace or ebay after allSad Anyone used a clearance company before? Was it hassle free at least (even if you lost out on money)?

Find a car boot sale!

Somethingsnappy · 13/02/2022 11:51

Oh, sorry, just realised all the heavy stuff. Sorry, forget that!

PigeonLittle · 13/02/2022 11:56

I would take pictures of the home and all the stuff in situ, ask a friend to write a poster - moving house, everything must go.

Hold a garage sale, and ask friends to monitor the outside and if anyone comes and is interested in the larger furniture you can take them inside - one at a time dont let your house get mobbed.

Ask on Facebook for man and van recommendations so you can have details to hand out and rough idea of prices. Mark from X said it would be £100 to take the bed within 3 miles. That way you can get it shipped out soon after the sale too.

Great suggestions, thanks!

I've always sold bundles of baby stuff no bother on Facebook market place!

I like the idea of a car boot sale though, just have it at your house. Who cares if your neighbours don't like it, it's one day and you're leaving anyway!

munchmom · 13/02/2022 12:17

Did you have to package and post the baby stuff or did you manage to find someone locally to pick up? If you posted them, was it actually still worth it with the postage costs included?

OP posts:
Lou98 · 13/02/2022 13:32

@munchmom I had people locally pick it up. If they were in my town or the next town over I offered to drop off for free but it's only 5mins to the next town and I take my son for nursery anyway so no problem.

If they were further than that I'd offer to drop off for delivery cost if they didn't drive or that.

I never ended up posting anything but I think things like clothes bundles would be easy enough to post but just make sure they pay you for postage

Theunamedcat · 13/02/2022 13:36

We have virtual garage sales and house clearance sales on Facebook people snap the stuff up in my area

They literally put up a post saying house clearance everything must go offers accepted (if you want to accept offers) photos of everything (get a whiteboard and pen put the prices IN THE PICTURE) and take it from there even give a collection date ie myst be collected by/on

It should go

Be prepared for people letting you down, not turning up and claiming all sorts. My idea for you would be to take it all to one of those second hand furniture shops. If you priority is moving things fast that’s the best option. Ebay is OK too as is marketplace at times (although lots show interest then never turn up).I currently have a case (not received) against me for a signed for item that is showing as delivered with buyers signature! I am a little bemused about how she thinks this will pan out for her Grin You will need a thick skin and patience!

munchmom · 13/02/2022 14:51

Yes, that’s my worry too that it could be a lot of hassle to sell items individually to different people, who then don’t turn up, start complaining and so on… used ebay quite a lot in the past and not sure I have the time and patience for it now. Some second hand shops might be a good idea for at least the furniture and white goods or some auction house maybe.
