To drink this wine?

A bottle of screw top red wine that has about a glass and a half out of it. Has been sitting in the kitchen (lid screwed on) for over a week.

Would I be unreasonable to drink some more tonight? My husband thinks it'll taste funny and is insisting on throwing it out and buying a 'fresh' one.

A tip for the future up to 3 days old pour it into ice tray and freeze then use it in gravy or Bolognese. Over a week I would chuck it.

WheelieBinPrincess · 12/02/2022 08:56

You don’t throw it out, use it for cooking.

SheWoreYellow · 12/02/2022 08:57

Try it and see.

If its only had the screw top on, its likely to be heavily oxidised and will taste off. See how bad it is - I'd not drink it but it might still be ok to reduce down into red wine gravy.

Red wine tends to not taste nice after 3 days of being open but it’s still good for cooking with.

Mykittensmittens · 12/02/2022 09:00

My husband only drinks red and not very much of it! Usually with Sunday dinner - one glass.
So often that bottle will remain open and he’ll have one glass week one, one week two and the last week three! As long as it’s sealed it’s fine. Bottles of spirits in our drinks cupboards are months and months open and still consumed.

Try it. One sip/sniff will tell you.

After 3 days red wine starts to smell and taste like soy sauce. It's not 'gone bad' as in going to be bad for you but will taste pretty damn funky.

Keep it and use it in a casserole or gravy amd crack open a fresh bottle.

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

This is a very simple 'try it' situation.

If it tastes fine, drink it

If it doesn't, don't.

Wine doesn’t keep like spirits due to having less alcohol content.

I also think your husband might just have a palette for the vinegary side of wine 😂 As long as he’s happy!

@MiddleClassProblem I’m not moaning - he’s cheap to keep happy!! 😂
