To be done with covid testing!!

user1496146479 · 11/02/2022 21:31

I've had enough!
Three children! Numerous stints of positive tests, while supposed sick child is fine!
Huge chunks of school & missed each time.
DH & I barely keeping our heads above water both professionally & personally!
AIBU to say I'm done testing?
And that if I have a child that is unwell, I'll keep that child home to recover, but the rest of us with get on with things?

Anyone who wants to get vaccinated/boostered can, vulnerable will have to take precautions like they always do?

@sst1234

Are people still testing? Get on with your lives people and stop with the hysteria now.
I test regularly as I need to know, ideally before symptoms start, if I'm positive. I can then access antiviral treatment which needs giving within 5 days, and before the virus kicks in. The virus can cause more serious issues in some vulnerable people and the antivirals can help reduce this massively if given as soon as infected.

Based on my two experiences of covid, the antivirals made a big difference to me.

I work in a school so come into contact with covid a lot. So I check regularly just in case.

Also need to check for travel purposes. Currently at an airport waiting to check in - everyone in this queues has been required to test in order to travel in the plane.

Dh has to test when visiting clients in care homes/hospitals/hospices and does so voluntarily score visiting very vulnerable clients in their homes.

@ilovesooty

vulnerable will have to take precautions like they always do

Well that's a sweeping disregard for millions of people.

Never mind. Unless you work in the NHS there won't be any testing soon, which should please you no end.

'Like they always do"

What do you mean?

No particular precautions are needed for diseases which
a) are not in high circuiting n
b) have readily available treatments that are not in such shirt supply that regional units decide who gets them.

Thus idea that it's somehow no different to other infectious disease risk is wrong, and that has been explained in thread after thread after thread.

Overthebow · 12/02/2022 07:08

Just stop testing if you way to. I’m a couple of weeks in England people won’t eve need to isolate with covid, and tests won’t be free for much longer so people won’t be testing anyway.

I do feel sorry for the very vulnerable but realistically there’s nothing more that can really be done. Covid is here to stay and of course people can’t legally be asked to isolate and test forever.

TheOrigRights · 12/02/2022 07:16

@KimchiWithMe

People are still testing?
Of course. I want to visit my FIL in this care home and it is one of their rules. You need to broaden your mind

Oh yes....me wanting to minimise my risk of taking an illness in to a care home which could kill residents is hysterical
StrawberrySquash · 12/02/2022 07:18

'People are still testing?'
Yes, I'm WFH at the moment, so target my tests before I see people indoors where I could infect them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/02/2022 07:22

I assume you'll be OK about it when your children's teachers get covid from them and classes are taken by TAs or closed altogether. It's happening now and will get worse with more covid + children in school.

ticktockriojaoclock · 12/02/2022 07:29

People are still testing?

Yes and apparently people are still being falsely obtuse. It's still the guidelines to test (in Scotland anyway, not sure what is going on down south - apparently you've got this thing beaten Grin), the virus is still potentially harmful. I find it staggering that people trust Boris Johnson of all people on this tbh.

EricScrantona · 12/02/2022 07:39

I used to think threads like this are crazy, why would you not test?! Then DH had covid and DC had an outbreak in their class and I was going to be around vulnerable people all in the same 3 week period. I got so bloody fed up with that I just can't be bothered. DH felt cabin fever but has had worse colds so wanted to go out. I know he was lucky but very frustrating.

EricScrantona · 12/02/2022 07:40

But I will continue testing while I have free supply.

SartresSoul · 12/02/2022 07:43

Stopped doing it a while ago, definitely stopped when the NHS started dishing out the old school LF tests with the throat swab again.

I’ve said it a million times on here but I had it in December and I’ve had much worse colds. It was just annoying burning sinus pain for about three days and my LFT’s turned negative after 4 days.

MoiraNotRuby · 12/02/2022 07:45

I test before I see people who are vulnerable/worried about covid. I mix with a lot of people and I am quite the hugger.

gonetogroundnow · 12/02/2022 08:01

Yeah I stopped testing at christmas. Almost two years of significantly restricting ours and our childrens lives to protect the vulnerable is enough now.

It's half term, we've got a fun and exciting week planned and I don't want each day to start my shoving swabs up my pre schooler's nose.

Dutch1e · 12/02/2022 08:04

We're in the Netherlands and stopped testing after the household had Covid. It wasn't very long ago and very mild so it was (presumably) Omicron. In all honesty it was the cost of the home tests that tipped the balance. We were asked to routinely test twice a week but at €3 per test per person for a 3-person family that's over €70 a month for useless plastic waste that gave one of us a false negative anyway.

They must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 12/02/2022 08:10

We gave up testing after we both had it before Xmas. I'm boosted now , can't get any more protected than that. If ds is poorly then he'll be treated as if he has any other illness
We weren't in the habit of pushing ourselves into close contact with people when we were poorly before covid , so what's different now ?
If we are carrying it asymptomatic then that's just the way it is, we are all probably carrying all sorts of viruses undetected at any one time.
There are still parents shoving things up their kids noses at every opportunity, I feel sorry for the kids .
I don't care if some kid at a birthday party 2 weeks ago now has covid , ill not be subjecting my 8 year old to any more neurotic behaviour

Wannakisstheteacher · 12/02/2022 08:11

I don’t test now. Ever. I’ve had it already, plus had 3 vaccinations I didn’t want to “protect the vulnerable”. If I’m ill I’ll say at home, but I’m not wasting anymore of my life.

DS missed the most important sporting competition of his life because he tested positive, but had no symptoms at all. From that moment onwards I’ve withdrawn from all testing and will never consent again.

TulipsGarden · 12/02/2022 08:16

I always think these threads are the government checking where the population is at (and possibly adding a few replies to push things in the direction they want).

miltonj · 12/02/2022 08:19

I've never routinely tested. Once when I'd spent time with my brother who had it. A couple of times when coming in and out of the UK. My grandma asked me to do one before I saw her. And I had to do it before I gave birth. So yeah, if you're done, you're done!

RG2468 · 12/02/2022 08:22

I know plenty who will have had it/got it due to close contact and then symptoms who just didn’t test and have carried on working etc

Samcro · 12/02/2022 08:24

@Pbjontoast

And if people want to continue this crap they can pay for there own lfts. How much is this costing?
yeah make people like me pay. have to have a test before I can visit my child in a care home.

vulnerable will have to take precautions like they always do
  1. not everyone classed as vulnerable to covid will know it until they get it
  2. a pandemic is a little bit fucking inconvenient. That’s the nature of the beast
  3. you can carry on provided you don’t test positive

It is so shit but throwing caution to the wind now seems a bit folly.

Iggly · 12/02/2022 08:25

Hahahahaha and the sad thing is, it could well be true.

As if they’d listen to actual scientific experts rather than a random collection of anonymous posters.

MinnieMountain · 12/02/2022 08:26

I’d love to but DH is a stickler for the rules. So when he tested positive on Tuesday (before going to the dentist), DS and I had to start testing too.

Chasingaftermidnight · 12/02/2022 08:26

So users have to pay for the tests in the Netherlands? In the U.K. they’re free but I don’t think they will be for much longer. I suspect people’s attitudes to testing will change substantially if/when the tests are no longer free.
Iggly · 12/02/2022 08:28

I don’t mind paying for tests although only if they’re actually decent sensitivity and can be relied on.

At the moment, our government have overpaid private firms/their mates for some of these junk tests so no wonder they want to stop them.

When they stop isolation rules, people will stop or reduce testing anyway so they should continue to provide them free (not free as we do pay via tax) but I strongly suspect the numbers will drop anyway. As they must be now?
