To think eBay are absolutely killing themselves doing this?

Or am I missing a beat?

I've just sold an item on eBay for the first time in a while.

Sold a pillow for £35.

I sold it at 8pm last night, I posted it at 9am this morning. Yet they are "holding" my money for 14 days, and they are charging me £5.19 fees. And this is all normal and usual and how they do things now.

I think surely there is some kind of mistake?!

I join a chat and the person just stops talking. I call someone and they end up shouting down the phone to me, I can only assume I'm the millionth person to be calling with the same query.

I've now taken off my other 4 items, will be deleting eBay and have downloaded Vinted.

AIBU?! How can they justify those fees?! And that wait time?!

That's 15% fees!

Wtf?!

I'm still gob smacked.

YANBU, I gave up selling with eBay and now use Vinted.

Theballoonsinthesky · 10/02/2022 22:26

Why are they holding your money? I have mine set up to pay into my account daily when I've sold something so the next day it goes into my bank. Monday to Friday only. I agree the fees are high and some things just aren't worth selling on there

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/02/2022 22:28

YANBU EBay are wankers

Hawkins001 · 10/02/2022 22:28

Certainly seems unprofessional

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/02/2022 22:29

I haven’t sold anything on there since they demanded bank details - as if I’d trust a company that doesn’t even operate here with that.

Alittlepotofrosie · 10/02/2022 22:30

The fees are very clear when you list an item. Not sure why you are surprised that you've been charged a fee. If you're a new seller then that's why they've held the money to make sure it's a genuine sale. It's all in the terms and conditions.

earsup · 10/02/2022 22:36

its a new thing....you need to verify something...i did it a few months ago but havent sold since but they did hold cash for 14 days same as you until i did this verify thing via my phone number....i am selling an item soon so will see how long i get the money etc.

Dita73 · 10/02/2022 22:43

This happened to me when I started selling. They held the money until I could prove I’d sent the item and for about a week after it had arrived. I then had PayPal withholding the money as it was “unusual activity for my account”. That took even longer. Once you seek more regularly they lift the restrictions but it is a total pain in the arse.
Fees for these sites are fairly extortionate. I use Depop too and that’s pretty good. I’ve tried Vinted but it was a waste of time

Twinkle1989 · 10/02/2022 22:44

I sold a dress on there and advertised it as a size 12 but explained it fits Me and I'm a size 10.

Bidder buys it, doesn't fit them and demand to return despite me saying it was a 12 on the label, said I falsely advertised it as a size 10...! eBay buy protection froze my money and has issued them a returns label - at my cost and gave them a refund....

They can stick any more items up the arses! A s fees!

Iamtired123 · 10/02/2022 22:46

Is this an add for Vinted 🤔 ?

1987qwerty · 10/02/2022 22:49

Fees are the same as the old ebay and paypal combined. Does the £35 include p & p? The holding is because you haven't sold for a while.

LizzieMacQueen · 10/02/2022 22:51

I think the 15% fees is not far off what you'd have paid in paypal + ebay fees under the old regime. You just need to price your item accordingly.

Re postage, if you buy via ebay then, although not advertised as tracked, the basic 2nd class will come with tracking details which is very useful.

I'm not new and I haven't just started selling though.

I've been buying and selling stuff (nearly 1000 items in total) since 2008.

InaccurateDream · 10/02/2022 22:57

I wait for the seller special offer days (not sure new sellers get the offers tho) to keep fees low as possible.

I thought about Vinted but looks like you don’t get the money until the buyer clicks to say an item has arrived. Wasn’t quite sure how it worked!

Same, money is in before I post it most times
Ghastlyghoul · 10/02/2022 23:01

I remember them doing this when I first sold anything - holding the money. But with the fees I now only sell when I get 80% off deals as with a lot of stuff it’s just not worth the bother by the time the selling fee has been deducted.

MrPenguinsPoppers · 10/02/2022 23:01

I closed my account last week, I joined in 2000, in the days when you could leave feedback for any reason and didn’t have to have a transaction with that person. I bought and traded with a lot of people in the USA and we used eBay as a feedback platform, despite our deals being done on forums. It was all very weird now I look back and obviously they tightened everything up.

Anyway. First they asked for bank details, then they wanted to know the what the two small sums of money they had deposited for security were. I did all that. Then came the request for my driving licence. I did that. Four times I did that yet they still kept emailing me.
Eventually I decided it was now an outdated, expensive platform that I really don’t want to bother with, so I closed my account.

What did they say?
OP posts:
notsohippychick · 10/02/2022 23:03

Did you press “promote your listing” when you listed the item? If you press this they set the “promotion fee” to whatever fee others are choosing. It’s quite sneaky. It’s only optional but I’ve made this mistake a few times

EBay have also changed their payments and don’t pay your though PayPal anymore so it maybe this is why they are holding on to your money.

I don’t use it much now. Sellers seem to get a rough ride even if they are in the right with customer complaints.

Thewindwhispers · 10/02/2022 23:03

Yanbu. I stopped selling on ebay when they insisted that sellers accept electronic payment (which they reserve the right to refund to the buyer if there’s a dispute). So if I sell an expensive item and the buyer collects and then claims it had a fault, not much I can do? Plus I don’t trust ebay with my bank data anyway.

Is a shame it used to be a great company. I think it was ruined ages ago by all the professional sellers of dodgy new items, when it was mostly second hand used stuff it was great.
