AIBU to go to work after wisdom tooth removal?

Getting a wisdom tooth removed under local anaesthetic tomorrow. Dentist said it 'should be' straightforward. I'm a teacher and have work afterwards. People who have had this done under local, will I be ok do you think? I've never even had a filling before, so this is my first experience of 'invasive' dental work. I have just had Covid too and am now out of isolation, but still getting hit by waves of tiredness, which may possibly be exacerbated by the wisdom tooth removal. I'm just not sure if I'm being unrealistic trying to go to work afterwards, or if it'll actually be fine! Stories of removal under local welcome! Thank you!

I had a lower one out under local and went back to work that afternoon. They sent me home! Was a bit puffy and maybe dribbling a little- but felt fine!

The swelling does take some time to go down. I doubt the kids will be that concerned about it.

Good luck with it.

I had my impacted two removed due to recurring pericoronitis. Read up on causes of dry socket to prevent it, no straws, swishing etc.

I had local anaesthetic and had incisions, my jaw bone chipped and stitches. I had a mild sedative, I went hive to sleep with blood running down my chin. I head water in my mouth to rinse then just let it run out (no spitting it swishing). I passed out and when I woke up i was swollen and in a world of pain. I was then sick for 2 days as I tend to react badly to anaesthetic. I got an infection the following week. After the first week I was totally fine though as I bounced back quickly.

I wouldn’t go back to work. The dentist will probably tell you to go home and put your feet up.

I did have a reaction to the anaesthetic once and the dentist made me sit in the waiting room for half an hour before I could drive home.

I also had dry socket once although that won’t affect you on the day.

I had mine out last week, one top one bottom.
The bottom one was impacted and at an angle. I'm still in a bit of pain now but only because I have a massive hole in the one next to it that they can't yet fill until the sockets close 😷
You should be fine by the Monday.

Don't do it! I could barely open my mouth enough to put little spoonfuls of mashed potato etc in for a few days! Face swelled up like a hamster....so much pain.

Oh you had it done in February!!

PurpleButterflyWings · 03/11/2022 19:15

Really depends on the individual. I had 2 out (6 weeks apart) some 6 or 7 years ago, and was right as rain/back at work the next day. DH had 2 removed in 2019, and he was off work for 3 days one, and 4 days for the next. Made him really ill. As I say, I was fine though. Smile

Take the day off;go home;rest;take pain killers, you might need an ice pack.I had 3 of the feckers out plus a molar as one of them had damaged the molar next to beyond repair.I ended up having two weeks off afterwards although I worked in a call centre so my job needed me to be able to talk properly.

@helpteeth good luck with the removal today! A GA takes a couple of days to recover from (I didn't have mine removed under GA, but have been under GA three times for other reasons). I would maybe take Monday off tbh, as you'll be feeling exhausted more than anything. You also can't eat as much, which contributes to the exhaustion. You will be swollen, but it does go down fairly quickly. I had a lot of bruising, but not everyone bruises as easily as me! I got an infection, but antibiotics worked really quickly. Luckily I had 4 days to recover, as I don't work Monday and Tuesday, so I was ok teaching by the Weds. I'd maybe take Monday off just to be sure. Teaching isn't an easy job at the best of times, and I think having had all four removed, you'll need an extra recovery day.

(accidentally relevant username)

Had mine done years ago on a Friday evening for some reason, went dressed up and straight out for the night after - that’s maybe not advisable, but def could have gone to work!

I had mine done in my lunch break. But I had a desk job. I think performing in front of a class would have been exhausting after.
