Council tax refund £150

AlternativelyWired · 09/02/2022 20:46

Please could someone explain this to me? Is it £150 credited to your bank account or does it get deducted from your council tax bill?

@MsAgnesDiPesto Ah, I read OP's post completely wrong. Well aware of the difference between a rebate/refund - lack of sleep absolutely getting to me!

SmolCat · 10/02/2022 15:11

It’s not means tested @Troublesometooth so the fact you have two children is irrelevant. A whole house with four bedrooms is hardly going to be a low band is it. If you really think they’ve got it wrong you can request a review.

My 4 bed detached is Band D.

Yes I would say most are likely to be D or E depending on the area and house.
whereisnoah · 10/02/2022 15:27

This could be an opportune moment for people to ask for a review of their council tax banding if they feel it's wrong. I did so and managed to get my house rebanded from an E to a D.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 10/02/2022 15:31

Your comment to Troublesometooth that her small 4 bed house "is hardly going to be a low band is it", implying that she's unreasonable to expect the £150 rebate, seems a bit uncalled for then.

Leftbutcameback · 10/02/2022 15:32

I didn’t know that it was only bands A-D! I’m pretty sure we are band C, so good to know it’ll come back into our account. As we don’t pay council tax in Feb and March if I add that to the rebate (and hide it somewhere) it should pay for the fuel rise for the next few months at least.

lucywho123 · 10/02/2022 15:35

Im only Band B so more than qualify but I think its so unfair that its not at least band E. Some very moderate houses are band E these days and surely most people living in them will be classed as middle class 'normal' family

The fuel rises are going to hit everyone so the same approach should therefore be applied to everyone

ShavingTheBadger · 10/02/2022 15:41

I’m in a band E in a three bed up in the north west. Nothing ostentatious, just a tiny cottage, but it’s in a conservation area. I live on my own and even with the 25% discount it’s £200 a month. I’m gutted that I’m missing out.

AdmiralCain · 10/02/2022 15:44

I think It's bollocks, Utter BOLLOCKS. I live in a band G house, I get spanked, my bill will be about £3200. I don't earn £40K +
People in a band A house earning £100K plus will get a £150 refund.

How is that right!!!

It isn’t right. The council tax system is very unfair. There are some houses in London worth millions of pounds on lower council tax bands than us.
FatFredsFriedEgg · 10/02/2022 15:49

These days? The bands have never changed. If it's Band E then it's estimated to have been worth roughly £88,000 to £120,000 on April 1st 1991.

Understandably £88,000 to £120,000 bought a far smaller house in Surrey than it would have done in Salford.

CJay81 · 10/02/2022 15:50

We are still waiting if we'll receive it here. Welsh government haven't announced it yet.

Leftbutcameback · 10/02/2022 15:52

These are all very blunt tools - for example even if you don't get the credit on an energy bill (because you don't have a house at the time) you'll still be paying back the £40 each year afterwards.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 10/02/2022 15:52

I doubt very much that most recipients will notice it.
Once you add the 3ish%+ increase in bills, your monthly payments will go up anyway.
Complete waste of money.
It should have been targeted at those who need it, not those in lower banded properties who can easily afford it.
Likewise the "loan" of £200 on your gas/electric bill - that hasn't been explained yet, and I don't want it.
I will not be in debt to this deceitful government.

user1471457354 · 10/02/2022 16:07

I'm in Scotland and I don't think we are getting this 150 rebate and our council tax is being raised £400 a year from April!

Doggynoname · 10/02/2022 16:12

I called them up and go a refund to my bank when this happened to me. I had the chose to have it deducted or to have it sent back

How if it has not come into play yet? It wont happen until April
Hamjamwich · 10/02/2022 16:22

This will reduce most people's direct debit by a few quid a month. It won't make a difference

Fridafever · 10/02/2022 16:26

I earn well into 6 figures and am eligible- my house was valued recently at about a million but it’s band D. I’m going to donate the rebate.

Creamegg84 · 10/02/2022 16:27

The gov.uk website says the £150 will be sent to the bank account that the bills come out of if you pay direct debit so it is a lump sum cash amount that you can spend however you wish

AlternativelyWired · 10/02/2022 16:38

Sorry, I should have been more specific in my title and op as I've confused people. My council have now said it's a payment t into my bank account so that will be nice. I'll try and save it towards the winter fuel bill next winter.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 10/02/2022 16:50

I trust my local council about as far as I can pee, so the chance of me giving them my bank account details are somewhere between no chance and fuck all...

TheNorthener · 10/02/2022 16:56

Bloody typical. Working single parent getting shafted again coz I live in band bloody E house.

Iamkmackered1979 · 10/02/2022 17:01

I live in a band E too, temporary accommodation council tax is included but single parent so low income. I could do with it as this house costs a fortune to heat etc
