Has anybody else received a nasty email that knows your name and where you live, that says they have captured you on camera watching porn and threatening to send this to your contacts unless you pay £500 into their bitcoin account. I'm actually freaking out about this.

Yes I have had a few of these. As PPs say it is a con. Delete and move on.

SpaceyCake · 09/02/2022 09:58

I've got this a few times before too. I didn't think much of it but did change a couple of my passwords just in case. It's good to change them every now and again anyway.

takingmytimeonmyride · 09/02/2022 10:06

I got one the other day. It told me if I told anyone about their blackmail scheme they would send it to all my contacts. I told my DP. So far none of my contacts have contacted me about the video they've been sent. Maybe they're all in too much shock? Grin

Tothemoonandbackx · 09/02/2022 10:14

My grandma had one Grin it was hilarious, she read it out to us, I said to her, "well, whatever you get up to in your own time is your business, but out of curiosity, what we're you watching??" Grin She burst out laughing. Was an obvious fake as they wanted $$ and said they'd go to the Sherrif?????

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 09/02/2022 10:19

Respond with an offer to sell them the full footage on DVD as a box-set for £500 in bitcoin.

TheDogsMother · 09/02/2022 10:21

Well known scam. Change your passwords and delete the mail.

tazzyb · 09/02/2022 10:34

@FannyFifer

Same as this email?
That's the one! Thank you for posting this. I'm so relieved...you have no idea what a relief it is to actually see the same one! And....breathe! 😅

Awww u poor thing, glad I could help. X

Hoppinggreen · 09/02/2022 10:38

I had one suggesting I had been wanking to videos involving children.
I wasn’t the slightest bit concerned because I hadn’t

MrPenguinsPoppers · 09/02/2022 11:00

As an aside, good practice to put a camera cover on devices anyway. £4 for 3 on Amazon, probably cheaper still elsewhere:

Sliding Camera Covers

Kittykat93 · 09/02/2022 11:08

But op I'm confused - I mean yes it is a scam. But if you've genuinely never watched porn and masturbated to it why would you even believe the email in the first place ??? 🤣

fourleggedtable · 09/02/2022 11:09

Repeatedly!

Woahthehorsey · 09/02/2022 11:33

Yes, I had this. Knew my name, postcode, email address and a password I used a couple of times. Just delete it. I did and nothing has happened.

twoshedsjackson · 09/02/2022 11:33

When I received one of these scam emails, I was a bit baffled, as the gloating about my discomfiture assumed that I was i) male ii) an office worker rather than a retired pensioner, apart from the fact that I have never accessed porn.
I resisted the temptation to reply in sarcastic terms, pointing out spelling errors etc., as I didn't want to let them know that they had actually made any sort of contact. It's the "scatter gun" approach; some of the recipients might have a guilty conscience........
As a PP pointed out, if they know so much about you, why would they need your banking details?
I reported it as a phishing scam, and encourage you to do the same.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 09/02/2022 11:47

I swear someone started a post about this a couple of days ago.
Unless me trying out the beta site has messed things up 🤷
I've had an email that looked like it was sent to and from my account. That worried me as I was using a library pc so it could have been anyone 😲

CruCru · 09/02/2022 11:56

Yes, I’ve had this. It’s a load of nonsense. I’ve also had an email from a Russian woman who appears to want to cook me nice food and “be sexy” with me. This stuff is aimed at men.

Captnip500 · 09/02/2022 11:57

I had this once years ago. It’s a scam, don’t worry at all.

Hoppinggreen · 09/02/2022 12:16

Well it seems my prostate is the size of a lemon and STILL sexy Russian ladies want to meet me

MorningStarling · 09/02/2022 12:19

I thought everyone knew to place a sticker over their webcam when not in use? That way even if they catch me enjoying some porn all it will be is a black screen.

Whitefire · 09/02/2022 12:29

We often get emails at work to an address that is harvested from the website. I used to get emails about parking tickets, the guys in a different team used to get ones a out hot girls. Most unfair.
tazzyb · 09/02/2022 12:31

Ok so for all those asking...I looked, that's all. But I felt really guilty for doing so and worried for ages afterwards that someone would find out that I'd looked. This was a long time ago and forgotten about. When I saw the the email last night I just went into a huge panic. I didn't think about the logic and that I hadn't actually looked repeatedly or done what they were suggesting. I just remembered that I'd looked and couldn't bear to think of the shame and humiliation if anyone found out. I'm obviously quite niave. That's all.

Yes. Just delete it. Don’t worry.
I really feel for some people who have been duped by this crap

tazzyb · 09/02/2022 12:33

But thank you to everyone who replied and helped to reassure me. Lesson learned!

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 09/02/2022 20:41

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 09/02/2022 20:44
