I am trying to declutter but there are so many things I don't know what to do with. What do you do with boxes for things like jewellery that you use? Mugs that you bought that your children could use when they get a flat? Games that you loved and might play once a year? Books that you will read when you retire? Clothes that you love and wear on holidays abroad but only go abroad once every 5 years ...that kinda thing...

What do you do with boxes for things like jewellery that you use? recycle bin
Mugs that you bought that your children could use when they get a flat? charity shop
Games that you loved and might play once a year? container theory storage. Pick your fave 2-4 max. Rest go on ebay/to charity

Books that you will read when you retire? no you won't. Read in the next 2 months or Charity shop.

Clothes that you love and wear on holidays abroad but only go abroad once every 5 years
one vacuum bag pack limit per person. Excess is sold or Charity shop. Vacuum bag goes under bed. Contents reviewed annually and pre any new purchase

You. Are. Welcome.

Qualifications: my DH.
He fishes things like broken mugs and old toothbrushes out of the bin and asks if I am sure I meant to throw them away. He then sometimes hides them round the house.
Last holiday he insisted he needed new holiday shorts..not shorts in general. Holiday shorts. A stock take identified 8 existing pairs Confused no new shorts were purchased and 2 pairs were forced into retirement.

I want a paid job of helping people to de-clutter their lives. I don't want to make a fortune off of a client, but I would so enjoy the work!

Singlebutmarried · 09/02/2022 07:27

Every time I de clutter it reappears.

I’ve no idea how.

I’ve got shelves that have the (5) cook books I’ve kept, games and Lego sets (in boxes) and the shite keeps breeding. It’s like the magic porridge pot.

I’ll got through it all again at the weekend.

Bonus is that we now have a skip so I can do some proper chucking.

Get rid of the books but make a list of them. Then when you retire you can work through the list at the library.
Definitely get rid of the jewellery boxes and mugs. When I moved out I got a bit sick of relatives offloading their junk onto me when I wanted to choose my own stuff!

Phrenologistsfinger · 09/02/2022 17:18

YANBU, decluttering is hard.

Starryskiesinthesky · 09/02/2022 17:32

Thanks everyone ! You have given me the motivation to go big and go hard! I am also going to watch the youtube videos but not buy the book! I do agree with wanting to buy your own stuff rather than get others peoples junk offloaded on you! Thats what has happened to me - things have been offloaded!

Get rid of things like mugs , they are so cheap to buy and part of setting up home is buying new bits like that - they will just bin them
