To be bummed that " a semi formal event" is not formal at all?

I'm going to a business corporate event and the dress code was "semi formal" so I thought it would be "cocktail" but it just needs no jeans :(

Oh that photo this post, it didn't fit me BTW, a d it zips at the back so had to return it.

Wouldn't a long gown be formal?

I have the opposite problem

I’m going to a properly formal swish do on Thursday but have broken ribs and a broken collarbone.

The only dresses that fit me (post covid gluttony) require scaffolding rather than just underwear, and I can’t do buttons so I’ll be going in leggings, a top and boots!

So what would an 'informal' event be? Bra and knickers?

White tie = gown
Black tie = cocktail dress
Smart casual = chinos not jeans

But I can see your point OP. You have assumed semi-formal = black tie, whereas they have assumed it = smart casual.

As a PP has pointed out, if it were a cruise then you would be correct.

As you can see we also had "business casual" so why not call it the same thing

Love the first dress but it is a bit over the top for smart casual, second outfit is also very nice and more suitable. But then I am an old fogey😳

oh dear, that dress is a big no for any work event.

Dress codes are rubbish, but if business casual is then changed to Semi Formal they mean dress nicer than usual, but not like going on a night out. Is that easier for you?
