ML -
Fuming to hear @KwasiKwarteng*
said fraud & online scams aren't something “people experience in their daily lives”*

For the Biz Sec to say this is outrageous. Millions face it. It destroys lives & mental health. Pls apologise

More tone deaf Tory lies

Wtf? Surely he knows this happens all the time, generally to the more vulnerable people who are easily taken in by scammers.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/02/2022 17:57

Exactly

The Tories not one of them are in touch with real life.
They are so detached from real life they might as well "govern" from the moon.
Useless bunch of tossersAngry

The tories gaslight people. They're gaslighting the entire population of the UK.

I genuinely couldn’t fathom this when I heard it. Does he have a tenuous grasp of the terminology or something? Does he think it’s only something that happens to big business? He’s either utterly incompetent, utterly clueless or a pillock. Probably all three.

Absolutely love Martin Lewis...such a great guy and he's totally right

Completely agree, the man is a modern-day hero. I've learned (and saved!) loads from his site.

ML was on PM on R4 earlier and he really is cross about this. Rightly so.

CorrBlimeyGG · 08/02/2022 18:31

Kwarteng doesn't realise (or care) that his words will stop victims of fraud from seeking help.

I know people that have been scammed, and they wouldn't report it because they felt they were at fault, they were so ashamed. I managed to get their money back, but there are people far worse affected that haven't seen a penny back.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/02/2022 18:31

Martin Lewis makes an important point about the online harms bill.

At present if I placed an ad in a paper for something that was a scam, the paper could get into trouble.

If I do that on facebook, there is no sanction - and Martin Lewis had to take them to court at great expense to get them to stop pushing bogus adverts claiming he (ML) endorsed things.

This is the imbalance and how little Facebook cares about scam adverts.

The government could legislate in the online harms bill. But for some reason they don't want to.

I heard him. He was absolutely livid

He doesn't usually get party political but you could tell he's had it up to here with this current cabal

The corrupt Tories are not just out of touch with normal people, they are on a different planet!

In this case it's not a matter of him not understanding. He obviously understood fine - he even tripped up and included fraud in his list of 'important' crimes, before realising what he'd said and correcting himself.

The whole point was to support Johnson's outright lie that crime had dropped by 14% from the year ending Sept 2019 to the year ending September 2021.

The 14% figure omitted 'fraud and computer misuse' which had actuallyincreased by 47% during the period in question.

Altogether crime had increased by 14% during the period. More importantly the 'other' crimes which had reduced by 14%; physical violence, shoplifting, burglary, robbery etc., had reduced due to the lockdowns in 2020-2021, rather than because of any positive steps taken by the government.

Lolapusht · 08/02/2022 18:46

I’d be intrigued to know why experiencing something on a daily basis makes it a crime. Most people (thankfully) aren’t robbed or assaulted etc on a daily basis but they’re still somehow crimes?! Thank god the government is giving fraud such a high priority. Those pesky scammers are well known for being so useless and out of date when it comes to evolving new ways to get money out people 😡🤬
