To be late 40s and not want to stay in my dead end job for another 20 years 😪

I am 47 and have cared for my daughter so didn't work until 10 years ago. I've missed out a huge chunk of my career and now find myself in a dead end job, which I am not happy in. It dawned on me that I have 20 years of employment left. Am I too old to retrain? I wouldn't know where to start. Would love to hear other people's experiences. Thank you x

What sort of job are you in and are there steps for progression to other roles? Eg retail - supervisor, management. Care worker - management.

Are there particular jobs/industries that you would like to work in?

I dont think you're ever too old. I'm 38 and have just started a degree with the Open University as I want to change my career. I haven't studied for 20 years and have been at home for the past 3 years with my youngest. It'll take a few years but hopefully it will be worth it. Like you say you have a long time left working so it would be nice if you could do something you enjoy!

OP, there’s an entire new board that was started exactly for you! Mature Study and Retraining, here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mature_students

Take a look at a few of the threads (the list is over three pages now!) - then see how energised and optimistic you feel.

(If you ask MNHQ they’ll move your thread there for you, too …)

Am linking the initial thread:

  • just to get you started.

Enjoy!

You could check the NHS jobs online for any vacancies, maybe working for them already might help?
