Advice on used car sales please

Am considering buying a used car from a dealership. Price is on for £8495, but when I checked it on autotrader it said it was worth £5695. They are giving me some money off for my car, at the same price as quoted in autotrader (£1500). They will also be including a year's warranty, MOT and service.
Am just wondering, is this a normal mark up or should I be trying to negotiate? Thanks

Dealership prices are always higher than you'll get your car valued at on somewhere like Autotrader, WBAC etc. Also, main dealerships tend to be, usually, dearer than 'standard' second hand car dealers.

And of course, you haggle. Don't ask, don't get.

I've just haggled on the price of a new car as well as getting a few extras for 'free' (I know stuff from dealerships is never free Grin)

Used and second hand cars are a ridiculous price now but yes do haggle.

MorningStarling · 08/02/2022 10:06

Dealers always charge more. The Autotrader price is probably for private sellers, hence why the dealer offered you that in part exchange.

You should always haggle with car dealers, they expect it and price things higher accordingly.

I have no idea about any specific car prices but regardless you should be negotiating whatever the starting price is

Just because second hand car prices are at an all time that doesn't mean you should pay the initial asking price.

when I checked it on autotrader it said it was worth £5695
Was that what Autotrader said it should be priced at on a dealer forecourt? Or a private sale? Or as a trade in?
Retail prices will always be higher as they factor in costs of preparation for sale (cleaning, servicing) the cost of warranty and other overheads as well as profit - it's not cheap renting a garage, employing staff, paying for equipment etc.

araiwa · 08/02/2022 10:13

Go find one at £5695 then

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 10:13

Have you looked around for comparable cars from other dealers or car supermarkets etc?

With no further detail, it's not possible to say whether the Autotrader price is realistic and the dealer price is high or that's what you'll need to pay sadly.

HowlongWillThisTakeNow · 08/02/2022 10:16

You can try haggling, but the used car market is really strong at the moment, you might get a few quid off, but don’t expect much at the moment

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 10:17

Have a look at car supermarkets, the prices are fixed, more or less, so what you see is what you should expect pay.

You might be able to negotiate an extra service, tank of fuel or similar, but it won't be the case that you're being ripped off if you don't negotiate a big chunk of the screen price.

Sausagedogsarethebest · 08/02/2022 10:52

Dealers have overheads to pay, and they usually give the car a mechanical overview to ensure everything is working properly. With a private seller you buy as seen and anything could be wrong with it.

I bought a used car a couple of weeks ago and although the dealer said there was no money off for cash (they like the commissions they get from finance deals) I did manage to get a few hundred off by haggling. They expect the customer to haggle and price the vehicle accordingly. Don't be quick to say 'ok then' if they say no money off.

Thank you everyone, this is all very helpful advice.
