To pull out of this course?

I have started a masters module this week which 2 of my colleagues are currently undertaking (they started in October). For context I am a health professional qualified 15 years and haven't undertaken in any major studying in 10 years. Our department was given some funding from HEE for some members of staff to undertake this course which would result in a potentially useful (though not essential) qualification for our job role.

The course is about 6 months long and is made up of quite a large portfolio (made up of 2 essays, 4 reflective accouts and a large evidence of learning in practice which includes 90 hours of supervised practice and various siogn off of competencies and observed practice. There are also two exams (one numeracy, one pharmacology) which you need to get 100 percent and 80 percent respectively.

Obviously this is quite advance stuff academic wise and altough there is support and resources available in terms of helping write academically, I know I am completely out of my depth and have been advised by course leader that I am going to have to work very hard. My colleagues already doing this course- one has a masters already, the other has been qualified 3-4 years and so have more recent experience on this side of things. My dad was previously a lecturer in the health field and I know would read my drafts, so would have support from that angle and the lecturers are happy to read drafts and the course has even been broken down for us with a week by week plan of what should we be doing.

Obviously this is being done around my full time (already fairly stressful job) and I have gone down to 4 days a week. I have 2 DD's aged 5 and 9 who are both at school My husband works from home full time and is very supportive and does all school runs et ande wold do whatever he could to giev me the space/time to finish this course. I turn 40 this year and to be frank my confidence is at an all time low and emotionally feeling in a rut (I've previously had a few episodes of clinical depression in the cast, mainly triggered by major life events thugh still have low episodes now and then).

I don't know if I would need to pay the course fees back if I pull out (though I could do this) and due to the nature of the course it couldn't be offered to someone else at this stage. They had allowed funbding for 5 of us to do this course, but only 3 have taken it up . AIBU to pull out? Sorry for all the typos, I've been up since 4.

Sounds tough OP. However, can you stick it out for a little bit longer? I don't think I've ever started a course where I didn't feel out of my depth in the first week! Obviously if that continues then you should reconsider though. Why did you want to do it originally?

UsernameInTheTown · 08/02/2022 05:29

YABU OP. Knuckle down and get it done, you can do it, I have faith in you Flowers.

LizziesTwin · 08/02/2022 05:48

The start of something new is going to be intimidating, you have the support of work & your family, you can do this!

Wobbles in confidence are normal, power on, show your children how you undertake new challenges and your success will show them the way.

You can do it!

Hercisback · 08/02/2022 06:00

You have a day a week, which is a luxury, to get it done.

You can and will do this.

Hi OP,
Sounds like your NMP?
I completed a few years ago, honestly I would give same advice as previous posters. I understand about the workload but if you get on now, start week by week putting it all together it won't be so overwhelming.
Can you make a plan for next six months about now you'll manage the workload? Some of it you can start getting done right away. It sounds like you have some great support from around you.
Also do check in with your work about any extra protected study time.
It's a great opportunity, best of luck!

Thank you peeps, and yes it is the NMP module. @Catipepo they have given us a week by week breakdown more aless of the work load but I will talk to the others who started in October about it they have any extra protected study time and yes I will sit down and work out a proper plan. I didn't particulary want to to the course but knew it would be a useful string to my bow. Im just aware that of all the masters modules I could have done I have probably started with the worst one.. I'm the only one of my profession in this current cohort and most are doing it as part of a wider masters, where I am doing it as a stand alone module.. I've just been out of the uni game for so long i felt really lost yesterday..
