Thread worms

I think my 3 year old has thread worms, she woke crying in pain last night saying her tummy hurt and her vagina/bottom were itching. We had about 2 hrs of crying and she eventually fell asleep. I haven't found any worms and I've ovex'ed us all today but she's worse with the pain tonight. I've given calpol and sudocrem and tummy rubs but is there anything else I can do? I didnt think worms caused so much pain? I'm also slightly worried it might be something else as well, I just don't know. I rang 111 last night and they really didnt care much so probably not worth trying again tonight. Anyone else had similar? Anything I can do?

Is it definitley in her bottom, could it be a UTI? I get them regularly and often get really uncomfortable itchiness (but not in the realms of thrush) externally when I have it. It is so painful and can leave me feverish.

My daughter was screaming with worms but I could see them.
I put vasaline all over which helped until the ovex kicked in.

MissSmiley · 07/02/2022 22:26

@TripleTipplePipple if it is worms (have you actually seen any) the only thing that really gave relief was to remove them, nappy changing position, they come out at night, and pick them off with a tissue, I think they hurt more on the vulva with girls. The ovex usually works quite quickly though

TripleTipplePipple · 07/02/2022 22:27

@JanuaryJones22 I did wonder about UTI but no temperature and I'd have thought she would have had pain weeing? Shes also been fine all day

I'm not sure they usually cause a stomach ache. I had them a few times as a child and itchy bum was the only symptom

TripleTipplePipple · 07/02/2022 22:35

I just don't know, shes saying it's her bottom and it's scratchy and also saying her tummy hurts occasionally. Nothing looks red nor can I see any worms. But she's just so upset and I'm struggling to keep her calm. No temp, sickness or anything. Just keeps screaming that her bum is hurting.

DS had worms and had tummy ache in the night for weeks before I realised what it was. If she wakes up crying have a look around the anus with a torch

TripleTipplePipple · 07/02/2022 22:35

It was roughly the same time last night as well

DD also used to cry at night saying her bottom hurt, turns out she’s allergic to soap and using anything in her bath would make her vagina burn

minipie · 07/02/2022 22:39

If it’s the same time each evening - say 2-3 hours after falling asleep - that is very consistent with my (depressingly extensive) experience of threadworms. Sometimes you see them, sometimes you don’t, they are sneaky buggers.

The ovex takes 3 days or so to really kick in. You all need to take another dose 12-14 days after the first one, without fail. In the meantime maybe Piriton can help with the itchiness? The itching really is awful.

TripleTipplePipple · 07/02/2022 22:45

@minipie does it go on all night? Or just a few hrs? Last night she drifted off to sleep around midnight and slept pretty well after that. She seems more agitated tonight though.

I was just going to say Piriton as well. Stops some of the itching and if it makes them tired then even better!

Onlyforcake · 07/02/2022 22:51

It sounds about right I swear they make trapped wind worse, which might be a source of stomach ache.

Llamadog · 07/02/2022 22:53

I used to find that a warm bath worked well for my daughter. She used to wake scream in at about 11pm, have a quick bath then I would lather the area in Vaseline. Takes a couple of days for the ovex to kick in unfortunately. It does sound like worms from our experience.

minipie · 07/02/2022 22:54

Usually just once or occasionally twice in the evening IME.

Basically (sorry way TMI) the worms come out after you’ve been warm and still for a couple of hours, lay their eggs round the anus, and then go back inside for the rest of the night.

minipie · 07/02/2022 22:55

The irritation is from the sticky goo that they lay their eggs in, so washing off the sticky goo with some wet loo roll or a wet wipe should help somewhat.

ILoveTeeeeeea · 07/02/2022 23:17

I second piriton, helps itching and might settle her down

MyCatIsAFuckwit · 07/02/2022 23:48

Aw, my girl had this problem a few times in early childhood. Sounds like threadworm. They are tiny and really hard to see. Same time in evening. Crying in pain. It's awful.
Treat again with tablets in a week.
Wash, vacuum, wipe down EVERYTHING, especially in bedroom.
Clip nails and discourage hands in mouth.
Bath right before bed, clean PJ's.
Wash hands b4 eating.

TripleTipplePipple · 08/02/2022 04:02

Urgh, I have work tomorrow. So tired..... had a few hrs sleep and she's woken again so nappy changed, bum wiped and sudocremed and I've given piriton. Still couldn't see anything. Trying to get back to sleep now. Thanks for all the advice, looks like I've a busy couple of weeks of boil washing and hoovering/cleaning coming up Confused

Definitely worms. She pooed a pile of the out and there were live ones on the tissue when I wiped.
