Do you read the full policy document when taking out car/house/etc. insurance?

Sorry for the very boring thread!

I’ve recently had a car accident and need to replace 2 rear facing child car seats. I naively assumed that my car insurance would cover the cost of replacement but it seems that they will only offer £100 voucher (to be used at Halfords only) towards each seat. Car insurer is Sheila’s wheels.

Admittedly it is in their multi page policy booklet, but I haven’t read that. Just wondering if I’m in the minority? And wanted to warn others in case you’re like me :)

YABU - I read the policy booklet every time I take out/renew insurance

YANBU - I don’t read the booklet, who has time for that?

Also as an aside - does anyone’s insurance cover the full cost of replacing a child’s car seat, and who are you with? (I need to renew my car insurance in a few months)

I check everything having seen dab and sIL caught out with house insurance not covering. I often pay more because I like to cover as many situations as possible.

Yes (I work in insurance).

RedskyThisNight · 07/02/2022 17:58

For things like insurance I do. There is an awful lot of variation between policies and I want to be clear that the policy offers what I think it does.

(I don't generally read the Ts and Cs on internet selling sites, as they are much of a muchness).

GrazingSheep · 07/02/2022 17:59

Are they cheaper than other insurers?
And yes, I would read the policy documents.

Gizlotsmum · 07/02/2022 18:00

I skim read so read the important bits, I would probably have missed the car seat bit

CrinklyCraggy · 07/02/2022 18:01

I can't say I read everything fully, but TBh if Sheila's wheels came out cheaper would you have thought it worthwhile to go elsewhere for the sake of the carseats?

We did get carseats replaced by Direct Line once, but DC are 18 & 20 now Shock so it was a while ago!

asnippersdream · 07/02/2022 18:03

Yes because I used to work in insurance and I know different policies exclude different things.

UKorNZdilemma · 07/02/2022 18:03

Not any more.

I don't know why? (Menopause maybe? Underlying health condition?). But I just cannot concentrate anymore, I genuinely find it difficult to make sense of swathes of text.

I couldn't understand people who couldn't understand pretty basic stuff (not talking quantum physics here) but now that's me too & it's horrific!!

thefirstmrsrochester · 07/02/2022 18:16

I do, used to work in insurance also.

Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives · 07/02/2022 18:44

I do. My car insurance is with Hastings Direct, my policy covers up to £300 per seat if it needs replaced. I can’t remember if there was an option to up that to get more cover. But that covers my DDs current seat.
