To ask if there are any experienced Fair isle knitters here?

Posting here for traffic.

I have lost my recently purchased and beloved new fair isle scarf and my colourway is now completely sold out 🥺

Does anyone happen to be or know a knitter who could knit me something similar?

Pic attached.

Not experienced, but have done it.

That scarf is a lot of work, I'm slow but I reckon even a fairly quick knitter would take maybe 40-50 hours (I'd be at least double!). Plus if it's wool probably about £40 worth of yarn. Not sure how long it would take on a knitting machine but I'd imagine still quite a while.

So would you be happy to pay over £500 for a copy?

faw2009 · 07/02/2022 16:21

Maybe try Etsy? Look for similar handmade items, message the maker to see if you can commission?

perenniallymessy · 07/02/2022 16:30

Also, and sorry to sound so negative, but no maker should really sell a copy of this as the design is that companies intellectual property. So you would only get something close to it, not the same.

In general people really underestimate the work that goes into handknitting. A lot of people who sell their work do it to cover materials cost and a little bit of cost for their time (so funding their hobby really). Trying to make a living from it is really hard as people wouldn't pay for your time even at minimum wage.

That's so gutting for you!
However that is a machine knit scarf (judging from how fine the pattern is) - for someone to handknit that would be weeks of work and cost hundreds of pounds.
You could try the Croft House - they have very similar designs and might be up for a commission.

This is an equivalent kind of handknit and is £124 for just the yarns and pattern!

£500 Shock

Thanks very much for all the replies.

I wasn't expecting a copy to be fair, just hoping for something similar.

Thanks for the links. I will call Croft House. I like the Lady Mary pattern - if only I could knit. Sad

Found a fair isle knitter on Etsy, thanks for the suggestion, have messaged her to see if she would do a commission.

I could knit that. Or something very very close to the design anyway. It uses some very popular and common fair isle motifs

The price though would be quite considerable once wool and time is factored in. That's at least 100 gram in each of the colours. More for the main colour, at £5 per 100g for an ok quality wool.

I always charge £10 an hour - that makes a scarf like this worth at least £350

Some people pay it, but a lot are reluctant

TatianaBis · 07/02/2022 17:27

Would you mind if I PM you?

£350 isn't impossible and I'm so heartbroken.

Of course you can.

TatianaBis · 07/02/2022 18:57

Done. Smile

@NotMeNoNo oh what have you done to me?! I’ve never come across that shop before and now I’m justifying to myself why I need to have some of their kits…

NotMeNoNo · 07/02/2022 19:47

Just to say, I knitted this hat in quite similar colours if you want a colour scheme. Love fair isle! Honestly it's worth learning to knit Grin
