Parvovirus - help

ShittyFingers · 07/02/2022 09:35

I posted last night about my poorly dog, emergency vet said it sounded like the sickness bug and as she was still drinking water it didn’t warrant emergency appointment but they’d see her in morning
Overnight she vomited water and had foul smelling diarrhoea (I thought it was vomit as it was the same colour but it was shit). Absolutely foul smelling, like sour metal. Brown coloured.

She’s now admitted and being tested for parvovirus!!?? She’s fully vaccinated, 3 years old, how can this be?? Dobermann if it makes s difference. Posting here for traffic as I’m so worried.

There is a virus going round that is affecting lots of dogs. I hope it's not parvovirus we lost our puppy to that in the 1980's.

Where we live (coast NE) ddogs are dropping like flies with a mystery virus. Speculation it is a version of Covid is in our local news.
Hoping your ddog is OK. We have actually cut down on walks here. 4 ddogs and fearful tbh..

Yeah I was going to say there is a DV thing going around. It's horrible but most of them seem to make a full recovery in a couple of days.

Isn't your dog vaccinated against parvovirus?

wetotter · 07/02/2022 09:39

There's a dog vomiting bug going round here as well

Fingers crossed for you

Clymene · 07/02/2022 09:40

Sorry you said she's fully vaccinated. Have Covid and my brain is fuzzy

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 07/02/2022 09:40

Our vet told us that even after our pup is fully vaxxed to avoid parks and other dogs for a while because there's a horrible bug about.

Your dog stands a better chance if she does have parvo because she is vaccinated and she has age on her side. Paws crossed for her.

I'm in Yorkshire and the vomiting bug in dogs here here has been confirmed as covid. Hope she's ok

HollyHocks13 · 07/02/2022 09:48

My (usually very healthy) dog has just had a horrible DV bug and I've never seen him so poorly. There's definitely a bug going around and I know lots of dogs who've had it. Hopefully this is what your dog has. Mine had anti sickness injections from the vet and he was back to normal after 5 or 6 days. We're in the South West.
It's so horrible and worrying seeing them unwell Thanks

No, it's 'a coronavirus', not COVID-19.

@FatFredsFriedEgg yeah my phone has started autocorrecting to Covid before I can finish typing coronavirus, should've proofed before sending.

Here's a link with a bit more information anyway.

My two had something like this. Not a particularly foul smell, but now I think about it, there was a metallic smell coming from the dogs themselves. Funnily enough the younger had it worse than the older.

They have recovered, but it was worrying. Hope your dog recovers quickly.

Because like many other viruses there are different strains and this parvo that is going around isn't as bad as the one you normally vaccinate against.

Speculation of covid in dogs prompted worried pet owners to put their pets down in other countries. What foolish reckless speculation, it makes my blood boil. Pets are said to cath covid from their owners but not the other way around. Also, dogs and cats that catch covid are not sick with it as humans are.

There is however a mystery virus doing the rounds with dogs, which has been going around for the last few months, it happens nearly every year but maybe a bit more this year. People who walk their dogs in woods and muddy fields are most at risk, especially if they don't wash their paws off after walks. Drinking from muddy puddles is to be avoided as this is one of the main routes of transmission.

Alabama Rot does the rounds every year and can take your dog in a week. For this ALWAYS check after every walk for cuts or wounds (however small), which are entry routes into the dog's body. I always use colloidal silver or Luecillin on any wounds frequently. Both are safe and non-toxic for dogs.

Its standard practice for vets to test for Parvo when a dog presents with vomiting a awful diarrhoea. It doesnt mean the animal has it, but it is something to rule out.

Parvo is on the rise in the UK because during lockdowns more puppies were acquired than ever and vets have become ridiculously overstretched. In turn some vaccines were delayed, not normally the primary course but routine boosters, but alot of puppies werent fully vaccinated at all as new owners never followed up the entire course. Because if this Parvo numbers are now at an all time high.

The vet is just covering all bases before a diagnosis of gastroenteritis is made.
Parvo animals are usually very poorly with bloody diarrhoea, dehydration and vomiting.
Fingers crossed your pet is ok!
