I've burnt the roof of my mouth so badly, there are lots of white blisters. Do I need to see a doctor?

On Friday night I stupidly, and without thinking, tried some seriously hot caramel (just off boil) off a spoon that hardened against the roof of my mouth and I had to peel it off. I ate lots of ice chips etc.

Yesterday it was ok but today there are tons of white patches and it's really sore. Eating is v painful.

I know it needs to heal, but anything I can do to speed it up?

That sounds horrible! I'd check with a pharmacist and see if they can recommend an appropriate painkiller and maybe a local anesthetic gel. 111 might be able to help too. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Notimeforaname · 06/02/2022 18:22

Yes go to a late hours pharmacy if you can.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/02/2022 18:22

Owww poor you. I'm not an expert, but Dr Google suggests you should if you have blistering, sorry.

Notimeforaname · 06/02/2022 18:26

It says that to eat and what to avoid etc

Notimeforaname · 06/02/2022 18:26

What to eat* Hmm

Lolabray · 06/02/2022 19:00

Salt water to help heal .. I saw my dentists when this happened to me x

Sideswiped · 06/02/2022 19:06

At the least see if you can get someone to take a picture of it for you and email it in to your GP tomorrow.
No-one here can tell you unless they can see it and are a medical professional.

Susu49 · 06/02/2022 19:07

Yes you need to see someone. A dentist if not a doctor.

Salt water is great for healing abscesses in the mouth but I haven't had a nasty burn, although I'd expect it to be just as good.

You poor thing, it sounds awful! Please do get it medically assessed Flowers

Pembertonrd · 06/02/2022 19:21

You need professional medical advice.

LapinR0se · 06/02/2022 19:24

Owwwwwwwwww

RVN123 · 06/02/2022 19:27

Mucous membranes heal very quickly, I bet in a day or two it will be very much better. In the meantime, paracetamol for pain and salt water rinses will help.
I'm not sure what your GP would suggest other than that to be honest although obviously you can see one if its bad.
You can get throat sweets (strepsils etc) that have a local anaesthetic component (usually lidocaine) in them, so perhaps that would help in numbing the mucosa a little and get you through the worst of the pain until it heals.

irritablehead1 · 06/02/2022 20:29

Thanks all. I don't know what a doctor would say, to be honest. I think I'll see how I get on it next couple of days. I've taken some painkillers, rinsed with salt, and tomorrow am I'll go to pharmacist and get this gel that someone else suggested

It really is crap, though. I can't believe I was so stupid.

I agree, you have a bad burn and should get some medical advice.
Andacherryonthetop · 06/02/2022 22:07

Oh that sounds so so painful! I would definitely get some medical advice. Poor you

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/02/2022 12:14

We've all done similar, don't beat yourself up. I once dolloped a spoon of English mustard into a recipe and then absent-mindedly licked the spoon Envy

BobaTea · 25/03/2022 21:21

@irritablehead1, how long did it take for your burn to heal, may I ask?

I've burned the roof of my mouth with hot liquid. The sores are starting to heal after a week but the area is still a bit painful.

Did yours last this long to heal?

WashedupTroll · 25/03/2022 21:27

Sorry Boba can't help but do love that whatever happens in someone's life has already been discussed on MN

Hello - I feel your pain! Actually, mine healed within a few days. I'm sure you'll soon be pain free.

Ouch this happened to my grandad, eating a chip straight out of gran’s fryer in the 80s. It did heal on its own but incredibly painful. If there is any sign of infection (easy with a mouth) get to the docs straightaway. Plenty of salt water rinse in the meantime

Oinkypig · 25/03/2022 22:59

You should be fine but you’d be better off at a dentist for advice as they’ll know what normal mouth healing looks like.

As someone else said though the mouth heals super quick. The dentist/pharmacist/GP might suggest difflam and yes it does work and I would have advised it myself as dentist prior to doing something similar. Yes it numbs but I found it so unpleasant I just decided to be hungry for a couple of days until it healed up….

Definitely take regular pain relief and warm salt mouthwashes. Hope you feel better soon!

Viviennemary · 25/03/2022 23:04

I agree with gargling with salt water and taking painkillers.

2DogsOnMySofa · 25/03/2022 23:06

I do this sometimes with pizza, the skin peels off after the blister and it's painful. The mouth heals really quickly, so keep eating the ice and it should be fine soon

Thethuthinang · 26/03/2022 00:02

Rinse your mouth often with salt water. It helps a lot.
