To think Aldi has gone a bit shit if you are a veggie/vegan

Actually Lidl isn’t much better. I used to quite like shopping in both of them but I really struggled to get decent veggie basics like lentils and beans etc. We are a bit of an old school veggie/vegan family- I like traditional veggie food like bean chilli and lentil spag Bol, mainly cos it’s cheap and you can bulk cook to save cash. There was lots of the fake meat type stuff but very few basics to actually cook with. I struggled to get stuff like soy sauce/ stock cubes etc. Even bags of rice that wasn’t that pre cooked stuff. We eat stuff like stir fry veggie rice etc - just quite basic veggie food.

Aibu to think it’s gone down hill a bit? We live on a budget but I am also busy and just need to be able to get most of what I need in one place- I used to be able to do that in Aldi but I can’t anymore. I also bloody hate loads of fake meat stuff- with the exception of Linda mcc veggie sausages.

Maybe it’s Brexit affecting supply too?! I don’t know- it’s just gone extra shit!! It’s our closest easiest supermarket that I don’t have to drive to so it’s annoying. Anyone else notice this?

Our Aldi has tinned black beans now. Yes - I can and do cook from dried, bit i love tinned black beans to have on hand. Ours also still has red lentils, but no other dried pulses I think.

But yes, loads of processed plant based stuff, which I mostly ignore. I find Sainsbury's and Waitrose best for dried beans variety. Or online.

Not vegan or veggie but do have multiple allergies and find Aldi and Lidl pretty dire. Soya allergy means we can't have a lot of vegan food too which complicates matters. They sometimes have ranges of vegan foods in but not all the things at once so I can never just shop there. Actually we are really struggling to find a supermarket that we can do a whole shop in. Sainsbury's comes close but doesn't stock many vegan yogurts etc where we live.

My local Lidls and Aldis have never had lentils in

@CanIHaveASnaaaaak

YANBU- it’s near impossible to eat a healthy and balanced diet as a vegetarian by shopping exclusively at Aldi and Lidl. The bakery/fruit/veg is great. But I still find myself driving to Asda for the main part of my meal. Hubby isn’t veggie and has it easy as he highly rates the Aldi meats.
What 'Main part' are you talking about? Surely the main part is the veg?

Today at Aldi I got: 3 types of pasta, including wholemeal and a special 3 colour one; box of couscous, basmati rice; wholemeal wraps; red lentils; green lentils; tins of mixed beans; chick-peas; avocado, tomatoes, aubergine, mushrooms, cucumber, rocket, snap peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, red onions, garlic, carrots, leeks, celery, peppers, tinned cherry tomatoes (for soup); coriander plant, basil plant, turnip, limes, lemons.

Together with salmon, free-range chicken, Aberdeen Angus beef, cod (DH and DC are not vegetarian)And a whole raft of fruit/ dairy items.

I saw soy sauce/ stock cubes aplenty.

It's clearly store specific, so OP is BU to tar all stores with the same brush.

It might just be that they have changed the range at your store dependent on what people buy

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 06/02/2022 20:35

I agree. I'm not vegan or even veggie but I do like veggie and vegan food and I can never get dried lentils and pulses in our local aldi. I have to go to our local asian supermarkets

YABU as our local Aldi is brilliant for vegan stuff, there's a huge selection.
