To think a Winter Olympics should have snow?

AIBU to think that you need natural snow to host a Winter Olympics

How can an area that only receives an average of 21cm a year of snowfall be awarded the Winter Olympics?

Just the skiing venue needs 1.2 million cubic metres of snow for Olympic events.
Making artificial snow is both energy and resource-intensive. Around 222.8 million litres of water have been used to make the snow in an area that already is short of water.

I completely understand why the ROC wanted to host, but why did the Olympic committee agree?

Maybe the UK will be awarded it.

@Honeyroar

I’m amazed they would be able to find anywhere substantial enough to train on the fake stuff! But yes, at least they are in the same boat

You quite often get fake snow in the alps if there’s not enough of the real stuff.

It’s not showing China off much either. It looks ugly, not like the usual skiing venues. You’d have thought they’d have the Wall as a backdrop.

It’s noticeable that the coverage is just sticking with the actual events. In the summer Olympics they had lots of fun background VTs about Tokyo and Japan.

I miss the atmosphere of typical European resorts with the crowds, cowbells, jovial etc

It’s totally dead and horrible
The abandoned steel works behind the skin slope look like something from a dystopian film
Then volunteers look dead behind the eyes

The Italian hosting sounds so much better - will look forward to watching it
