Squirrels, oil and telephone wires... AIBU?

So a bit of background. We have a telegraph pole directly opposite our house that supplies 9 houses including ours, and connects to 2 other poles in the street. Some time ago it got a red 'D' on it which means (apparently) that the pole isn't safe to climb so a cherry picker is used to access the box at the top. Opposite us is also a large deciduous tree (on one neighbour's property) and the 3 lines opposite us pass through this tree's branches.

Anyway, yesterday an OpenReach van showed up along with a cherry picker. One chap got to the box via the cherry picker and began reeling in the wire from the house opposite (I presume it was detached by him from the house, I didn't see that as I wasn't aware what was happening till I heard the noise of the truck). So because we've had issues with the phone/Internet connection in the past and it's essential for DP's work, DP decided to be nosy and have a chat with the workmen standing around. On his return indoors, DP relayed they'd said the wire had been partially chewed through by squirrels (is this a thing?). I chuckled and said why would squirrels chew through a wire? DP said they'd told him that the wires have nut oil put on them. At that point I burst out laughing. Is this really true or a massive wind up by the OpenReach guys? DP isn't into pranking me and isn't great with reading others' subtle facial clues, so may have missed he was being pranked.

So, AIBU to think that telephone wires are not coated with nut oil which attracts squirrels who'll chew them as a result? (Even writing that down sounds so bizarre that it can't be true? Are there people who are tasked with oiling wires? LOL!

Spoke to neighbour later who dropped by for something else, told her what they said. She found it very odd as well! Her 'net had been acting up, we both thought it far more likely that the wind had frayed the cables via chafing than a miscreant squirrel had gotten the munchies!

Squirrels absolutely do chew wires, as do all rodents. People whose lofts have been invaded sometimes only find out when the electrics go out. It’s very common.

The nut oil thing sounds like a wind up, though. Like sending the apprentice for a long weight, or tartan paint. Unless there’s something which attracts them in the composition of the rubbery covering, which could be true.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/02/2022 10:09

Yes I can believe squirrels might chew wires (although they'd really need to be dedicated here as the height of the wires would put them on rather flimsy branches!).

LOL at 'tartan paint'! Grin

Squirrels can and do chew through almost everything, nothing to do with nut oil though, that's a wind up!

Summerofcontent · 05/02/2022 10:13

I know someone who has had to have his car fuel line replaced because squirrels have chewed through them

No idea about the nut oil thing though

Wow, little buggers!

Some of the overhead cable are full of grease inside so many have nut content.

But seen damage to all cables from squirrels .

TBH think engineer was taking the piss

Tiredmummy123456 · 05/02/2022 10:35

Yes, squirrels chew through wire...rabbits do this with underground cable too. No, nut oil is not spread on wires.

Nut oil is pretty expensive anyway, last time I checked!

@Tiredmummy123456 rabbits do this with underground cable too.

Probably because carrot oil is put on these, based on the OpenReach guy's remarks! Grin

My brother works for openreach. I will message him and ask 😂
But think he was pulling your husbands leg

I think it maybe true, wire insulation can be made from soy as well as things like peanut oil, corn etc

WallopBang · 05/02/2022 11:47

I worked at Openreach many years ago as an engineer and think the nut oil is a wind up. It's not something I've ever heard of and it makes no sense to use a material which attracts animals to destroy it. If anything it should be the opposite!

I also can't think of one occasion where I replaced the dropwires (wires from poles to houses) due to being chewed through by animals.

Lots count of the amount I had to replace due to corrosion through trees though! That's much more likely.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/02/2022 11:53

@WallopBang Yes it would make no sense to me, either!

So apparently no nut oil but plenty of chewed through cables by a variety of critters

Squirrelblanket · 05/02/2022 15:14

Our telephone wire goes through a big tree and we had to have that replaced last year because it was completely frayed. The engineer said it happens because of the movement of the branches against the wire, in the wind, over time.

Ha! Well, very interesting, thank you! :)
