Do you get no choice in mentoring a trainee teacher?

I am doing a PGCE at the moment, is it correct that mentors don't get a choice in having to mentor a student? What do staff feel when finding out they are a mentor? I feel a bit sorry if the teacher is having to do extra work for no extra money by mentoring a student.

It’s explicitly one of my responsibilities as a Lead Practitioner but mentoring trainees is one of the most rewarding parts of the job and I’ve always enjoyed it.

It's swings and roundabouts about how much work it is to mentor a student.

At first it might be more work, but as they progress, they are planning, delivering and assessing your lessons.

Secondary school here. I like mentoring and take a student teacher every year. It's not a great deal of paperwork in senior school as student is only with you for one year group. What is valuable to them is tips and tricks.
