AIBU to ignore "positive" lateral flow

DD10 did a lateral flow this morning, and am pretty certain there was no line there 30 minutes later. 6 hours later when I went to throw it away there was a definite positive line!

Tested her when she got home from school and it was negative! I'll test again in the morning, if that shows negative can I assume she is negative?

She has no symptoms so doesn't qualify for a PCR

You shouldn't check after 30mins - the test result is invalid

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 04/02/2022 20:25

Yes ignore it

Porcupineintherough · 04/02/2022 20:29

I've had this a couple of times and have stayed negative. As opposed to this week when I've def caught COVID and have a lovely thick positive line.

NinaProudman2022 · 04/02/2022 20:30

It says to read the result after 15 mins and before 30 mins after 30 Minutes it would be invalid.

narisha99 · 04/02/2022 20:30

That's reassuring to know :-) I guess if I had put it in the bin straight away I wouldn't have had this dilema!

I always get a faint positive if I leave it a few hours on the windowsill. I guess it's a bit like an evap line on a pregnancy test? It doesn't indicate a positive though so you can be pretty certain she is negative.

I’ve left mine sitting out - after 15 mins there the strong red C line and nothing else. Look at it a few hours later and it’s ‘bled’ and there’s a random little red splodges on it.

phishy · 04/02/2022 21:49

Erm, did you read the instructions?

Porcupineintherough · 04/02/2022 21:53

Even if you read the instructions it can make you nervous if a line appears later. Hmm
phishy · 04/02/2022 22:01

Well it shouldn’t. Hmm

Well I took a test on Tuesday morning. Negative after 15- 30 minutes, picked it up to throw it away away 10 minutes later and there was a definite red line.

Had to wait half an hour to take another test due to having had a drink, but sure enough the next test came up positive immediately. We all have positive tests now.

Due to having a drink?

@TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky

The tests we have say that you should not have eaten anything for 30 minutes before taking the test. Sometime after I took the first test I had a drink, so I made sure that at least 30 minutes had elapsed since having a drink. Then took a new test.

Same with Dd the week before last Tuesday evening , did another test following day and she was a definite positive. I then had to have a PCR ( work requirement) came back positive symptoms 12hrs later, but no positive LFT for 2 days. Have been pretty grotty with it but isolation ends today Grin

Summersdreaming · 05/02/2022 09:12

Ignore it. Me and dp have had covid twice and as much as I think lfts are temperamental, when we've had covid the positives come up straight away as the liquid goes up the window.

It should be reassuring because you read it wrong both times! You're either supposed to read it 15 or 20 minutes later, depending on manufacturer, not after 30 minutes. Both readings are invalid.
KrisAkabusi · 05/02/2022 09:18

FFS! SHOULDN'T be reassuring.

housemaus · 05/02/2022 09:45

Both DH and I had positive PCRs after this happened to us - left the tests on the side, came back way later and saw they were both positive. Took another day after, strong positive and then positive PCR later that day.

I'd take another tomorrow just to be sure.

This happened with my daughter, I tested us all in the morning they were all negative, threw the test in the waste paper bin and went off merrily to meet up with friends. When I got home 6 hours later the test on the top had a grey line. I was a bit Hmm as they have never done that before and the others were the same as in the morning. I had no idea whose test it as so we all retested and hers came up with a strong positive straight away. She had no symptoms at that point.
