To not know where to go to remove stick earring

Sorry not an AIBU really but looking for quick-ish responses. Earring is stuck - the butterfly just won't come off and the more we try the more swollen the lobe round the back of the butterfly becomes, and the more panicked the patient! Antiseptic spray and oil haven't helped.

Aside from A&E where can we go to get this removed? Would somewhere like Claire's Accessories or Accessorise help? Do we need a nurse?

When I was a teen the butterfly back went half in my earlobe, think the hole was closing and did so around the clip. My mother cut my ear lobe! And yanked the ear ring out

Ice, a tweezers and a very tenacious sister who would not give up worked when this happened me many years ago!

Wowzel · 04/02/2022 19:51

Go to a piercing studio, they'll get it out easily

Floydthebarber · 04/02/2022 19:53

I think it's quite important. A worried, panicking 11 year old is going to react very differently to pliers and tin snips than a 19 year old.

Binglebong · 04/02/2022 19:53

Put the tines of a fork through the loops in tye back, it stops you needing to grip it. Pliers on the front and ice to reduce swelling.

This was to puttingoutfires comment.

It’s definitely a three year old, I can sense it 😂

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 04/02/2022 19:55

As above, ice to cool the swelling and try to open the butterfly up, the wings being closer will make it tighter, so opening it up should make it looser.

RobertsRadio · 04/02/2022 19:55

Vaseline might work if you rub it all around the earring, once you have reduced the swelling.

Binglebong · 04/02/2022 19:56

Actually if you can get it loose enough you can slide a fork or a comb up the front as well.

SomethingSuss · 04/02/2022 19:56

Fork at the front between the stud and the ear and put another through the butterfly. Pull apart. Works like a charm.

user1473878824 · 04/02/2022 20:01

Can you just leave it for a day or two until the swelling goes down and then attempt again with suggestions above?

cutebutscary · 04/02/2022 20:40

I used a pair of nail nippers from boots to snip the back off friends daughters swollen ear while holding the stud at the front. Worked a treat

Crimesean · 04/02/2022 22:03

Is it a little child? If so, A&E to get it removed, and don't bloody well do it again till she's old enough to give meaningful consent.

If it's an adult - assuming no fever, then wait for GP or see a pharmacist.

SheWoreYellow · 05/02/2022 22:40

How did you get on, @DaffodilsHouse ?

HeadPain · 05/02/2022 23:29

Medical professional somewhere

DaffodilsHouse · 05/02/2022 23:31

Ah thankfully I managed to snip the front off the earring with strong scissors and then get the back out! Thank heavens!

Would there be different options depending on the age?

Or are you just being snipey?

I think there’s a massive difference between a baby/toddler/child/teen/adult the person could literally be any age

ncagainformar · 05/02/2022 23:57

Well done OP

Trust me, your scissors solution is still better than me having to call DH and a set of pliers for a cross threaded ball on a vch piercing.
It's a good job we've been married many years. 😂
