To be so upset and surprised someone swapped their full bin with our empty one!!

I’ve lived in flats all my life until I moved to our house less than 2 months ago.

The bin collection situation was all new to us and we spent 90£ on new bins as previous owners didn’t leave their bins behind.

To prevent my brand new bins from smelling I put a liner on them and sprinkled with a nice smelling powder I bought online.

We leave the bins at the front usually as we are not used to open the 2 side gates that give access to the garden and find very tricky to use them.

The collection was yesterday and just minutes ago I headed to my food bin to put my compostable bag with food waste on it to find that bin completely FULL UP without a liner or compostable bags or anything. Just food waste directly on the bin 🤢

I am so upset…

Is this a thing or I’m just unlucky?
I see so many neighbours leaving their bins outside I thought it was ok?

What should I do to the loose food waste? Do I have to put it in compostable bags myself or will they collect it like that?

I am reading the council’s website but it’s not clear and there is no number to call. The only email I found about bins is to order new ones so not sure who to contact and what to do to someone else’s rubbish!

It might sound silly but I’m so sad my clean new bin has been swapped by an old stinky one that I now have to sort out and deep clean. I don’t even have space to put my own food waste for the rest of the week 😭

Any advice will be very helpful

Bins left on roads is rank....all lined up on the pavement overflowing with crap stinking, flies, maggots..yuk, especially in the summer!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 04/02/2022 11:18

No! We put them near the pavement Tuesday night and brought them back to near our door Wednesday morning like I see everyone doing

That’s fine right?

But You said this The collection was yesterday and just minutes ago I headed to my food bin to put my compostable bag with food waste on it to find that bin completely FULL UP without a liner or compostable bags or anything. Just food waste directly on the bin

So You are saying you pulled the bin back to your house yesterday after the collection and didn't notice it was full till this morning? Confused

icelollycraving · 04/02/2022 11:18

I do understand you being pissed off. People will take what they think they can get away with.
I pay a bin cleaning service, they come every month. I didn’t but it got really gross and maggoty last summer. First time I think was £10 for a super duper clean now it takes him about 1-2 mins. I’d still rather pay a fiver than do it myself.
Find your bin, paint your numbers on asap. Or you can get those stickers. Maybe a bin size sticker of your eyes? 👀

JugglingJanuary · 04/02/2022 11:21

@Tilltheend99

Whoever stole your bin is a cf. But equally, I dislike how the majority of people round where I live just leave their bins blocking the street all day every day. No one wants to be manoeuvring their pram or wheelchair around someone’s stinky bin and end up in the road.

It used to be considered rude to not bring the bins in (maybe 20yrs ago now)

Wine house we lived in, outside ours becayse 'the bin spot'. Not sure why really, but there you go... didn't mind too much until some CF would leave them there for days on end. So I started putting them on their front doormats 🤣 (if they were still there the next morning) petty maybe, but FFS why would they think it was ok to leave them there days on end?

(I knew they weren't elderly/disabled/etc just entitled twats

RincewindsHat · 04/02/2022 11:22

As PP have suggested, if you want your nice new bin back you're going to have to go hunting and grab it. When I moved into my new house, my new next door neighbours swiped my new bin and as soon as I spotted it, I marched over with their bin and took mine back, pointing out the flowers on the side that were there for bin identification purposes :) it has never happened again. Some people have no shame, so you have to match that.

mumofmunchkin · 04/02/2022 11:24

Bin cleaners are awesome! Ours was really disgusting. I pay £3.50 a month, and someone comes and cleans it once a month just after it's been emptied, and it's fab.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/02/2022 11:25

We have bin cleaners once a month.

In Southeast/Home Counties.

Our bins sit on the path that leads up to house (typical victorian semi front) so you walk by them every time you go in the front door and in the summer it can get grim-bin cleaners very nice and we have no access to water at the front so well worth it IMO.

And def number your bin!!!

JugglingJanuary · 04/02/2022 11:25

@Sailormooncloudylemonade

My bins are the ones in front of my house?

Aww bless sweet child. You'll soon come to realise that living in a house in suburbia is full of weird shit & endless annoyances, it's just different shut/annoyance than living in a flat!

FurbleSocks · 04/02/2022 11:28

DH accidentally sprayed ours with fence paint and funnily enough no one wants to steal it!

abigailsnan · 04/02/2022 11:29

In many of the £1 shops you can buy floral stickers which go down the side of your bins for identification purposes along with stick on numbers.
Be aware that some refuse collectors do put the wrong bins back in the wrong drive/garden it has happened to me and I have had to go and retrieve mine back again.

JugglingJanuary · 04/02/2022 11:29

@ImWearingReallyJudgyPants

Not entirely the point, but why on earth would anyone have their bin cleaned, ever? That is batshit.
Because they smell?!??
deeplyrooted · 04/02/2022 11:30

You need to go and hunt down your bin right now - this is primal, territory marking stuff! Your mettle is being tested. If you don’t retrieve your bin you are signalling weakness. Make it clear straight away that you don’t take shit and you won’t have your CF neighbour trying it on with you for years to come.

If you don’t tackle stuff like this hard, you may as well get back on Right Move.

You don’t have to be aggressive - you can be polite or a bit batty if that’s your style. Just don’t take no for an answer.

JugglingJanuary · 04/02/2022 11:32

@AllOfUsAreDead

This thread is hilarious. It's mad how many people get so upset over a bin. And lining them with bags and putting powder in so they don't smell? Grin Also how are these binmen managing to just throw bins all around the road? They manage to do ours properly here, it's about the only public service done right actually come to think of it.
Because they do the bins whilst the lorry moves, they don't stop at each house. We don't all lived in nicely spaced piles in the countryside.
Booboobibles · 04/02/2022 11:32

You can get bin stickers from Amazon with your number and road name. I’ve got flower stickers on mine too but that’s because they’re stuck in my front garden x

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 04/02/2022 11:36

Apart from food waste bins, how the bins get so smelly and dirty that need bin cleaners?
Recycle ones can't be that dirty since it meant to be washed before, non recycle ones shouldn't have anything that rot?

Whatamesssss · 04/02/2022 11:39

🤣🤣🤣 This is so true.

Warpaint optional.

VaizyCrazyDaizy · 04/02/2022 11:40

Search for your bin which will be pretty close by - near by neighbours are the usual culprits I find - your new and an unknown so they take the pee I find! Where I live my new garden bags kept being nicked but the next ones I spray painted giant house numbers on them on all sides with additional tiny print of an offensive nature telling ‘thieves - leave my ####ing bags alone’.

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 04/02/2022 11:43

The council provide bins, we pay council tax for this. They will give you one of each for nothing then £15 for extra ones. Put your house number on. Bin wars are common. I've not been affected thank goodness but I know many who have and it sounds very stressful. Put your house number on there.

KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 04/02/2022 11:45

Also, we have a guy who comes round to wash the bins. It's £3 every other week and he has a van and a nice system that cleans it all out. Where do you live? It sounds horrible.

Ballcactus · 04/02/2022 11:56

You’ll know which one is yours surely? If anything it’ll be the only one that smells nice. People are absolute savages with bins, it’s bin warfare out there

Soffit · 04/02/2022 11:58

I've had bin theft before. I knew immediately because my bin is the tired, manky one and I damned well stole it back.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/02/2022 11:58

@Haffiana We have a bin cleaner. Cleans it once every 2 month, costs £4.00.

OP what do you mean a 'liner and powder'? Do you mean a big plastic bag and chemicals? Pointless if so. Just adding to environmental waste.

SartresSoul · 04/02/2022 12:17

They may not have stolen it, rather mixed it up with theirs and dragged yours in by mistake. I live in a detached but I’ve done this a few times before and we do have number stickers on ours. It’s usually when it’s dark outside and the bins are side by side, I swap back when I realise.

veevee04 · 04/02/2022 12:19

Can't imagine getting so worked up about this 🤣🤣🤣. Have people not got better things to do ?

reader12 · 04/02/2022 12:20

Mention it to your nicest neighbour, they will probably know straight away who did it. Or just go scouting out where your nice bin is and swap it back.
