I only buy them in the sales!

Usually on topics about clothes, but it is becoming repetitive. Why does everyone who admits to purchasing from brands that have high price tags have to insist they ONLY buy in the sales? (white co, Toast, etc)

Is it some new kind of virtue signalling, to literally have to remind everyone that you never, ever pay full price? Who cares? It’s like insisting ‘I have impeccable taste but I am so terribly thrifty!’

So much bloody posturing around the virtues of thriftiness - surely this is designed to insinuate that the poster is of a certain class, whilst sheepishly insisting they don’t believe in it.

It’s a sort of extension of the repetitive class related posts that always insist they grew up working class but are (of course!)……middle class now! Every damned time. Are we a culture of clones?

Who days this crap in real life ? Grin
For the record, fairly lighthearted rant .

OP posts:

I've noticed this too OP and I also find it quite amusing. Both the "but only in the sale" thing and all the middle class posters with working class roots (who want to make sure everyone knows about it).

TempName01 · 03/02/2022 21:25

@heyitsthistle

The one that gets me is "oh, I like your jacket" "Thanks! I got it from Primark, £15". I have so many friends that do this and it gets on my nerve Hmm

The appropriate answer is "thanks!".

Wtf is wrong with that? If someone compliments me then I would say where it’s from, no idea it would annoy people
Peanutbuttercupisyum · 03/02/2022 21:27

I don’t get it either. I don’t get how it works. I mean you see something, love it, then what, wait 6 months for the sale only to find it not on sale, sold out prior to the sale or only teeny or massive sizes? So you’ve spent ages tracking something you’ll never have? OR, you only look when there’s a sale on? But surely you just see loads of stuff you like that’s not on sale. Lots of these brands are expensive, sale or not. If I’m spending 50 on something, the leap to spending 70 doesn’t seem much

NotVeryChattySchoolMum · 03/02/2022 21:31

I find it endearing British trying to downplay that they can afford/well-off enough. "sales" almost has a social equalizer element to it....isn't it, sometmes you do get some seriously good stuff from ebay/sales/FB group sales even if you could perfectly well afford it full price.

But middle class insisting they are working class/from humble north...crack me up, but that's another topic :)

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/02/2022 21:32

If you know something will eventually go on sale and you’re not in a rush to have it- why would you pay full price?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 03/02/2022 21:33

@TempName01 @WonderfulYou I know right? I like being told where the nice clothing I’ve complimented came from and price. And if a friend got it in the sale I’ll celebrate her bargain with her. Feeling like you got a bargain is a great feeling.

This thread makes me realise how different we all are and why friends I’ve lost asking the way may have been annoyed by me… their loss, I but if they find every innocuous sentence annoying or offensive it’s probably for the best. Life is exhausting following the rules of conversation per mn.

Very odd thing to get irked about. Confused

YABU.

Eh? Confused
Howshouldibehave · 03/02/2022 21:38

I completely disagree. I have quite a few jumpers from Hush, but it’s really expensive and I can’t afford them new, so buy them from EBay. It’s fine to like nice stuff but to not be able to afford it new.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 03/02/2022 21:40

Me: wearing something from a more expensive brand purchased in the sale
Mam: oh that's nice, where's that from?
Me: oh [insert shop name]
Mam: you shouldn't be wasting money on expensive clothes! You should be investing/saving/buying for DS/paying into pension etc
Me: it was on sale!

Honestly, I don't get that reaction if the item purchased was from Primark or something.

Etinoxaurus · 03/02/2022 21:41

My favourite brands are Coach, Paul smith, Agnes b you and comptoir des cotonniers and petit bâteau. They all have great- 50% off sales. I’d be naked or a numpty if I didn’t buy in the sales.

Littlepaws18 · 03/02/2022 21:42

I can't afford clothes that are not in the sale. I buy in charity shops, eBay, supermarket sales, my favourite brands sales. Birthday presents, Christmas presents are all bought in the sales. And I don't think this is particularly unusual, all my friends do exactly the same, so my question to you is....

Who on earth can afford to buy a full price wardrobe of clothes for themselves and their families?!!

Also for anyone who is interested Morrisons are currently doing a great kids clothes sale!

KittyTail · 03/02/2022 21:43

It’s on trend to buy clothes second hand or in the sales. I have purchased most of my clothes second hand since watching Stacey Dooleys documentary on fast fashion. I think it’s a good thing but yes, it is in a way virtue signalling that I’m doing my bit to recycle and save the Earth. I do it myself but I tend to say ‘it’s vintage’ if someone admires an item of clothing I’m wearing (meaning, I bought it second hand!). Saves me money, too. Win/win!

User0458832 · 03/02/2022 21:44

I don't love any piece of clothing enough to pay full price, if one item isn't there another will be, I could never get worked up about whether a certain piece of clothing might be available or not,

IDontDrinkTea · 03/02/2022 21:45

I love to dress my children in ‘nicer’ brands - jojomamanbebe or boden or similar because I think the clothes are adorable. But I worry I come across as a bit of a knob if I make it sound like I’ve spent full price money on something for a toddler to wear. So yeah, I would point out it was on sale as I think surely that’s better (and more truthful) than letting people think my toddlers outfit is £££ and I’m letting her eat pasta in it

QuizzicalEyebrows · 03/02/2022 21:46

I don't need new clothes but if they're in a sale then I can justify buying them just because I love them

Dahlietta · 03/02/2022 21:49

While I do buy a fair amount in the sales, I think the insistence is partly to avoid ridicule from the 'Boden/Joules/Toast/White Co are absurdly overpriced and only total suckers would buy from them' posters.

MargaretThursday · 03/02/2022 21:50

You got it in the sales? Riches. I only buy second hand Grin

User0458832 · 03/02/2022 21:51

I bought a few bits from Seasalt this last week or two, I always wait for the extra 20% off sale, if you buy from places like that the styles don't change year on year, they are just a different colour or pattern and I get good quality at a reasonable price

DrSbaitso · 03/02/2022 21:54

People want to be tastefully and stylishly dressed, but not foolish spendthrifts. It's a hard line to tread.

I can't understand the Toast obsession. Hate the stuff.

Tyredofallthis1 · 03/02/2022 21:54

I tell my husband and son - 'I love you so much that I paid full price for this.' I am notorious for looking around for deals.

Sniffing around for bargains is a sort of hobby for me, so I'm always looking for the real sales. And if you say that you bought something that is not only nice, but in the sales, you are signalling your bargain hunting skills as well as your great taste.

129orbust · 03/02/2022 21:56

I love Hobbs.
I buy lots of their clothes as they last for decades and look great.
I only buy in sales.
I don't want to pay £139 for this dress, I do want to pay £41.

Wife2b · 03/02/2022 21:57

For me it’s the judgement from other people that you are spending more money on something they wouldn’t find valuable. Almost like you have to justify why you’ve purchased something.

Campervan69 · 03/02/2022 21:57

I love a bargain, makes my day. I think you are reading into it something that isn't there tbh.

Isonthecase · 03/02/2022 21:57

I always say it when recommending something so people don't think they have to pay full price! And when I'm very proud of my bargain🤣
