Smoking/communal front door

Hi all,

I just want to get others opinions on this subject. I am in a flat, in a house, basically two flats, without outing too much. The neighbour doesn't smoke in the flat, thankfully, but instead sits on the doorstep a good, I want to say anywhere up to ten times a day, with the door open or sometimes pulled in a bit not that it helps, so the smell and smoke is all coming back in and making its way upstairs to me, and the front door area is awful, even my child mentioned it, as you are literally walking through it, the front bit outside of the door gets really disgusting with all the ash etc, and then sometimes cigarette buts thrown around. During the cold weather it has been really bad, with the door opening that many times especially at night, that on top of us having poor doors etc in the property, the cold is just coming through constantly so my landing is freezing makes the rooms cold too, even with door pushed to.
I know there are rules for the work place etc, but I don't know about for private properties with communal areas.

Be greatful for any opinions/feedback on this.

Thanks!

Have you spoken to them about this?
Smoking stinks and smokers don't realise this. I used to be one!
I'd have a polite word with them about it.

They need to get an ashtray, Take a key with them so they can shut the door and stand away from the front door. They could even get themselves a little chair to sit on!

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 03/02/2022 13:51

Is there anything in your lease. Agree she needs to go outside, shut the door and clear up her dogends.

Whammyyammy · 03/02/2022 14:10

YANBU, smoking stinks. But sadly smokers don't realised how disgusting they smell, so she maybe be unaware.
I'd just tell her straight , take your filthy habit outside.

MorningStarling · 03/02/2022 14:15

YANBU, but don't expect a smoker to ever be considerate. I have the same problem, they do shut the front door but the smell still gets in because they smoke right outside.

It's always been the same flat, whenever there is a change of tenant it's always a smoker (who never seems to go outside, except for their 20 fags a day).

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/02/2022 14:17

YANBU - it's disgusting and inevitably ends up in the communal areas then wafting through flats if doors are open at the wrong times.

No idea what the solution is besides banning smoking

Thankyou all so much so far. It is a bit tricky because of one reason hard for say here. But yeah it always annoyed me but now getting peed off really. I know in businesses etc i don't think you are allowed to stand in the doorway. Oh no lol these types of people don't want to have to stand out in the street, they want the comfort of sitting down. Having a chair not really a good idea as then on the path, and although I don't think anyone is going in and out twenty times a day, it would mean that person always being in the way! As they go out there often enough.
What annoys me is they have a garden, but then access is through the bedroom, and I guess then, i would have it all coming up to my room, so knowing their mindset on other things, they've probably thought this way was best.
To top it off person is expecting which really angers me to see them behaving in such a way but not my business.

Tenancy you mean?

Tenancy if youre renting, your lease if you are an owner. There might be something about smoking, keeping communal areas clear and clean, fire risks etc.

Lou98 · 04/02/2022 11:31

So is your flat and hers separate but in the same building, it's the corridors etc that are communal?

I could be wrong but I don't think she's allowed to smoke in the communal hallway but she could smoke outside the front door and have the front door open, as long as she was stood outside I think so you would still have the issue of the smoke coming in.

You may find though that if you ask her to stop smoking at the doorway, she might smoke in the flat instead - unless there's something in her tenancy agreement about no smoking.

Try talking to her and seeing what she says, she won't stop smoking because you've asked her to but she may be willing to find a compromise on where she smokes

God if she smoked in her flat it would be ten times worse! Probably have the alarms going off also. Plus I don't think she would. because funny enough I know a few, who don't want it indoors 🤦‍♀️ But quite happy to sit/stand outside and do it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Go on about kids health that they have, but standing there puffing away whilst fully pregnant, these are people who I don't feel should be having kids, but that's just my opinion of course.
