Fifty pounds savings

WobblyInAllTheRightPlaces · 03/02/2022 00:01

I’ve beeen struggling, financially, for mere years than I care to remember.

I would consider myself to be easy going, non materialistic, etc.

Still, the fifty pound I put into my savings this week seems like a mementos amount.

I’m committed to making a saving Plan for car, house (god help me, everything’s falling apart there).

I need help.

Well done, taking the first step is the hardest! Can you commit to £50 per month?

Set up a HMRC Help to Save account. Your £50 a month will be rewarded with a huge interest rate.

Well done! £50 is a genuinely great start. I could never save until I opened one of those internet bank accounts that lets you siphon your money automatically into little pots as soon as it hits your account, so you don't see it when you check your main balance and you're less likely to spend it. I have a pot of car, one for home repairs, one for Christmas and one for holidays. It's been life-changing. Might be something to consider?

Every little bit makes a difference. £50 per month is £600 a year!

I've done this, only applicable if you receive benefits but I've managed £50 a month, after 2 years saved £1200 and got £600 interest payment, almost fine another 2 years so will have another £1200 saved and another £600 interest payment. Where else can you get 50% interest on savings. Max amount you can put in is £50 a month but can be less

Have you tried Credit Union.
You can save even a tiny amount with them.

Look on Moneysaving Expert. I'm sure that, on a low income, you're probably already expert at budgeting, but there's usually something that most people can do to free up a little extra money, or shave a little off their costs and every little thing you do increases the money available to save.

Eg, Help to Save, if you qualify.
Getting free money for moving your bank account. People do this repeatedly, some have made thousands.
Review your broadband, mobile phone deal, TV subscriptions etc and always negotiate the price and be on a deal. It's simply not necessary to pay full price for most of this, there's always a discount available.
