winter coats would you really spend £100 on a 4 year old?

Was talking about this with a mum friend this morning - around us most kids wear coats that cost around 100 quid. To me that just seems a bit mad for a pre-schooler when others are so much cheaper. I mean how much technology does a pre-schooler need for a British winter. Same with waterproofs etc etc - somehow I just thought that kids dont really need this stuff but I've only just moved back to the UK so unsure whether am totally off the mark here

Even when we lived in a bitterly cold location h and m winter or puffer coat was adequate. You just layer it up.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/02/2022 12:55

Maybe £100 in total. Reasonably warm coat for nursery/school. Waterproofs(top and bottoms. Summer jacket. Spare coat if they have a tendency for falling in puddles.

But not on one coat.

fighoney · 02/02/2022 12:55

Well cold toddlers are pretty miserable to be around. But no I wouldn't spend that much. Wouldn't really annoy me if someone else did though 🤷🏻‍♀️

LadyCleathStuart · 02/02/2022 12:56

No way. It's just showing off. I always bought my kids M&S stormwear jackets and they were great quality and only about £30. A few years ago I bought an Asda jacket for DS as a quick replacement after he ruined his winter jacket at school and was really impressed by that quality also for £20.

I am not a clothes snob though and so many people are. I have seen it on here, people feeling like they are failing their children because they bought them supermarket wellies, it's madness.

oviraptor21 · 02/02/2022 12:57

Don't get started on shoes OP!

pombears22 · 02/02/2022 12:57

I am not annoyed that other people spend that much on a coat. More like thats basically all that other kids wear. I am still navigating British brands etc so was interested in where other people buy kids' clothes from. I come from a country where winters really are bitter so I know that warm clothes are important - it's just that British winters are pretty mild

Where are they buying coats from? I live in a fairly wealthy part of SW London and have never noticed any flashy brands. I sometimes spend around £50 on my kids coats, quite often I’ll pick up good quality ones in a charity shop so don’t spend much at all.

GigantosaurusRex · 02/02/2022 12:58

I bought DS a supermarket coat on sale this week to be put away for next year. I can't imagine spending £100 on a kids coat.

EsmeeMerlin · 02/02/2022 12:59

My youngest son will turn 4 next month. His coat for next winter is already bought and cost me £3 from a charity store and is originally from marks and Spencer’s. He will also have a waterproof all in one which was bought from lidl. Spending £100 on a child’s coat is silly imo.

pombears22 · 02/02/2022 12:59

@oviraptor21 - definitely. I mean 70-80 quid for a pair of shoes they'll grow out of in three months. In fact, kids' shoes budget seems higher than mine and we are talking about 4 year olds.

Erm no, £100 is crazy, I don't even spend that much on myself! (although my current coat came pretty close Blush). Definitely not for a child though.
Waterproof is always a good idea, but shower proof could do if you have the option to drive. I don't drive, so we usually cycle to school, and sometimes walk or use scooters. We need properly waterproof coats, but my children's current coats were £15 and £25 from Tresspass when they had a sale on. They've been warm and dry so far, so I don't see the point in spending any more on a coat Wink

CuteOrangeElephant · 02/02/2022 13:00

I spent 50 quid on a lovely Boden coat for my 4 year old (on sale). I wouldn't spend 100.

mistermagpie · 02/02/2022 13:00

Mine get a mountain warehouse jacket every year, they always have a sale on and are about £30 ish and great quality.

Waterproofs usually from Lidl, wellies from there or Asda etc.

I've got three young kids so there's no way I would be paying £100 on one coat, it's ridiculous. We obviously get extra wear out of hand me downs too.

girlmom21 · 02/02/2022 13:01

Honestly have a look in the Debenhams sale. They've got some nice 'proper' Regatta coats reduced to £15/20

NuffSaidSam · 02/02/2022 13:01

I wouldn't spend £100 on a coat for a 4 year old.

But it depends what £100 means to you. For some people £100 is £5. For some people £100 is a £1000. Depends what you have.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 02/02/2022 13:02

Ebay all the way

FunkyPhantom · 02/02/2022 13:02

Find your nearest TK Maxx, job done 😆👍

RedskyThisNight · 02/02/2022 13:03

I used to buy second hand at that age. So you could get a good condition, more expensive coat for about a fiver.

I don't think my 4 year old's entire wardrobe cost £100!

madisonbridges · 02/02/2022 13:03

I don't spend £100 on a coat for me and I make them last several winters. It's madness to spend that on a 4yo. More money than sense.

cherryonthecakes · 02/02/2022 13:04

I would spend £100 total on 2 coats, waterproofs, wellies and thermal vests

My teenager wears a £100 jacket but he's man sized and likes brands (North Face) Even in primary where he walked to school each day (so needed a warmer coat than kids who travel by car) , his coat was under £50 and he'd have a cheaper supermarket spare

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/02/2022 13:04

hell no, 20-35quid m&s or next

Comedycook · 02/02/2022 13:04

Absolutely no way. My dd is currently wearing a lovely warm coat from Next that I bought on ebay for £6...it was barely worn. Just bought my teenage ds a new coat, £35 from sports direct. I wouldn't spend £100 even if I could afford it.

RandomQuest · 02/02/2022 13:05

I buy mine north face coats a year ahead in the sale, full price they’re usually about £80 but in the sale they’re more like £50-60. Coats are the one thing I’m very happy to spend on.

Orangejuicey · 02/02/2022 13:07

Not in this country, no. We used to live in a country where the winters could get to -45 degrees Celsius and I bought an £80 coat then for DC. But absolutely not necessary in this country. Having said that, I do think it’s worth getting a good coat having lived in a much colder place, and so now only tend to buy coats from the hiking/ outdoors shops because they are very good quality. But I buy the rest of their clothes from Asda or other supermarkets.

RobertsRadio · 02/02/2022 13:07

I'd never spend that much for a child that age, they will have outgrown that in no time, such a waste of money. If you live in a wealthy area then I'd check out your local charity shops, chances are you will find decent kid's clothes for much less than £100. And you are right about U.K. winters being mild, so it's possible just to layer up rather than buying a high tech coat for sub zero temperatures.
