Did I see a ghost? Or am I going mad?

This happened on Monday. It’s been playing on my mind since.

I work in a largely unused community hospital. Some days, I’m the only person working there other than reception and a security guard. I run a clinic and my room is down the end of a corridor - remember there is nobody else in the entire building, all other rooms unused. Just mine at the end with its little light on.

So anyway, I don’t believe in ghosts, never have. However this corridor is bloody spooky sometimes and on a number of occasions I’ve thought I’ve seen someone walking around a corner only for there to be nobody there. I’ve heard the sound of a Zimmer frame walking towards my room, gone out to greet my patient and nobody is there. My cupboard door in my room has had a random rattling handle on a few occasion. A pair of scissors weirdly left my trolley and ended up on the floor (I didn’t see how, just heard the clatter on the floor and saw them lying there). Now, not saying those incidents are ghosts but it was unnerving so I asked security if we could put the waiting room TV on a music channel or something just to make the corridor less silent.

Anyway, on Monday I asked reception where I could find something I needed. She said “that sort of stuff is upstairs”. I asked how I got up there (didn’t even know there was a second floor!) and she said “you can’t, it’s locked”. So I asked security to let me up. He laughed and said “you going up there on your own? Because I’m not coming with you!” … long story short he unlocked the door to the stairs, I went up - was sorting through the stuff I needed and saw a nurse walk past the room I was in (not a shadow or Victorian dressed character, just an actual nurse). Thought nothing of it. Went back downstairs and as security was locking the door again I said “you know there is a nurse up there? Does she have a key for this door?” He said “nobody is up there” and locked the door. I said “I literally saw her! You can’t just lock her in!” He maintained nobody was up there and we walked back to reception where he told receptionist I’d seen “Julie”. Lots of dramatic faces and gasps, they tell me Julie is a ghost - had an aneurysm at work and died years ago.

As I said I don’t believe in ghosts but I can’t stop thinking about it! I definitely saw someone, they even described her and it was the same person I saw. Only thing I can think of is it’s an in joke and there is a nurse who works up there?? (But no patients go up there so what is she doing exactly?)

YABU - it’s clearly an in joke and the nurse works up there, the others say she’s a ghost to freak people out
YANBU - it’s a ghost, why would a uniformed nurse be working on an unused floor on her own?

It sounds ridiculous even to me as I’m writing this but I just can’t stop going over it in my head.

I caught a couple of episodes of this . Terrifying.

No one usually believe s in ghosts till you see one. Yanbu. My grandad never talks about the ghost he saw when he was a light Watchman. My dad walks into rooms and sees them all the time in national trust properties and will shock the guides with in-depth information of what he has seen.

I believe you saw a ghost even though I’m not sure if I actually believe in them. However I used to work in an old community hospital with a couple of wards one of them known to be haunted ! On my last drug round of the night 2200 so lights on when an old woman’s voice shouted in my ear ‘Powerplant hurry up’ as clear and loud as day. I looked at my colleague in the ward with me and asked ‘did you hear that?’ but of course she hadn’t. I was convinced it was a ghostly dead patient/nurse! So trust your gut and good luck with the camera 🤞

3scape · 02/02/2022 13:02

I think it's just your colleagues winding you up op. Especially as they made a thing out of it. They must have picked up on your fanciful ideas over the corridor noise.

EmmaH2022 · 02/02/2022 13:03

@SnotRags

Poor Julie 😔 hope the story isn’t true, would have to think we’re laughing about it otherwise.
I'm a practical hard headed individual with no hippy tendencies

You saw a ghost or spirit or some such

Possibly this Julie lady who won't mind that we're talking about it.

I can totally imagine my dad hanging round his workplace. Some people love their work. I am not one of them 😂 but it means such a great deal to so many people.

I'm going to bet Julie won't be there when you go up again, but she doesn't mean any harm.

The scissor thing is annoying, maybe just say hi to her when you arrive at work and she won't feel the need for attention.

I would be aware of this too

I worked in an old building in London with so many ghost stories attached, many of which were made up. The favourite one was a half a person's body going up in an elevator. I watched the staff member who made that one up tell it to many wild eyed new staff. He loved it, he was so disappointed when I just hmm-hmmed at him.

I might have to NC if anyone IDs me from that.

I just think your description says "ghost" even if you remove your colleague comments.

FanGirlX · 02/02/2022 13:15

I’m currently suffering from insomnia so you could be right!

I was really badly jetlagged. Sydney to London trip with delays. When I finally got home and into bed, I saw someone walk past my bedroom door. Never saw them again. I think my over tired mind was playing tricks on me.

burnthur5t · 02/02/2022 13:17

I'm open minded, never seen anything paranormal myself though

I did see or at least thought I saw my other half walk into the kitchen out the corner of my eye then realised he was sitting in the front room

Our minds can play tricks on us, the majority of experiences usually seem to happen at night or when somebody is half awake

Not saying you didn't see something op just that a lot of things are explainable

I have an interest in ufology myself but believe the vast majority of what gets seen is explainable, not all though which has been confirmed by the pentagon!

Morgan12 · 02/02/2022 13:17

Aw I feel bad for Julie. I hope she doesn't just wander up and down that corridor for all eternity.

5keletor · 02/02/2022 13:18

People like to believe in ghosts as, in general, we don't like to think death is the end and it does scare a lot of people, so believing that ghosts exist comforts them in thinking that we don't just stop existing. Although it is a comfort/coping mechanism, I don't see the harm if it alleviates that fear. I also have an elderly relative who feels like her loved ones who have died haven't really left her as she believes in ghosts, which is no bad thing as it stops her feeling as sad.
I think it will be colleagues playing a joke on you OP, it's the most likely explanation.

But what if someone you hate returns as a ghost? No comfort in that ☹️
5keletor · 02/02/2022 13:21

Oh I would feel bad for someone being trapped at work after death though, if there was an afterlife I really wouldn't want to spend it at my desk. 😂

5keletor · 02/02/2022 13:22

@EmmaH2022 I think she only believes people she loved visit her, although I've said to my partner many times that I'd be out the door like a shot if I saw any ghost, even if it was one of my grandparents who I loved more than anything. 😂

FanGirlX · 02/02/2022 13:24

reminded me of the ‘haunted stockroom’ on the top floor of a shoe shop I worked in as a teenager — the ‘ghost’ was John, a former employee who’d died in a fire in the 50s and who shot shoeboxes off shelves across the room and was a source of terror to the young Saturday workers. He was, of course, a total fiction invented years earlier by older longterm staff to provide an excuse for not having to trek up several flights of stairs from the shop floor. Your security guard is just lazy and canny.

My cousin invented the story of a ghost in their attic bedroom. It was because he had his PlayStation up there and didn't want the younger ones going up and disturbing him when he was gaming. The ghost deliberately only scared children who were too young for high school.

I couldn't agree more but work was dad's happy place

Mum used to call it his mistress.

You see it on here - "what would you do if you didn't work?"

If I wind up at my work after death, I know I am in hell.

I’m more invested in this thread than I should be, I hope you catch a glimpse of Julie tomorrow!

VelvetChairGirl · 02/02/2022 13:39

its a ghost, I kept seeing someone standing in a particular place in the park out of the corner of my eye, always seeing them, lived round here about 15 years, when I look to see them properly they are gone. always thought the park was where an old manor house or something was as there is these concrete bits and pieces there and the ground is all uneven and bumpy.

only found out last year its the remains of a bomb shelter that got a direct hit killing just over 40 people and they filled it with cement after to stop people trying to use it again, so I guess the person I keep seeing standing in an exact place was killed there as he's standing on one of the concrete things thats part of the shelter (entrance?).

when I was a kid I kept seeing a woman walk up the road and collapse around 1pm, then she would vanish, my mother couldnt see her, it was like a video on repeat, a woman got mugged and stabbed some days before it started happening, she did eventually fade away.

also my abusive ex worked in a shop where two staff died in a fire a few years earlier, they were found dead in the kitchen area at the back of the shop as the back door was locked and they couldn't get out, he said the taps kept turning themselves on in that kitchen and things got moved around, one time something chucked a spoon at his head, he was the only one in that kitchen at the time.

Bortles · 02/02/2022 13:45

Agree about it being 'pleats' of time or a recording. My mum and grandfather, both pragmatic, cynical people, saw my great grandmother a week or so after she'd died. A sound of a creaky floorboard made them both look up from dinner to see her like a still frame from a film in the act of passing the doorway.

Julieann418 · 02/02/2022 13:47

I work in a very busy hospital and spend a lot of my time in a large store room sorting stock etc,I have had quite a few experiences of feeling like someone is behind me or watching me and when I look there's nothing there ,I've never said anything to anyone but it's a bit unnerving.

PinkSyCo · 02/02/2022 13:48

Ooh I love a good ghost story and unless it’s YOU who’s on the wind up I believe where you work is definitely haunted. Poor old Julie though, left just wandering those corridors forevermore. Sad

stripeyflowers · 02/02/2022 13:49

Ghosts do exist.

Yes, flame me, I don't care!

VelvetChairGirl · 02/02/2022 13:51

Oh I forgot my flat is probably haunted, when my son was young he used to laugh at the old lady in the hall who smiled and pulled funny faces at him.

I cant believe its a coincidence when the old lady who lived here before, was found dead between the bathroom and the hall, I was still getting post for her for years, but I have gotten used to the idea of her being here and she hasnt done anything, if she's smiling and pulling faces at a toddler shes fine by me. (if shes still here, he doesnt see her anymore).

L0stinCyberspace · 02/02/2022 13:53

Meds, lack of good quality sleep, stress, suggestivity can explain some "sightings" but it's much harder to explain others.

Your sighting does sounds quite concrete OP. I saw something similar in a job I was temping in years ago. I described the person to my boss a few days later, and when she showed me a large staff photo from a yearbook I immediately pointed him out. He was a member of staff who died a few years previously.
