Thunderous Farting Exhausts!

Butterismylife · 01/02/2022 19:17

WTF is this? Seems to have exploded since the pandemic, at least in my experience. I live and work between Cheshire and Shropshire and it’s possibly worse in the south of the county. That said I’ve heard it in Greater Manchester when visiting family.

I’m talking about revving, popping and farting cars. The larger ones are worse, the floor shakes when they go past and the noise is ear splitting. I guess it’s some sort of trend, but there’s tons of them!
And they’re not ‘boy racers’, they’re often older, usually men, from a variety of backgrounds, so not something I could attempt to stereotype.

It’s mostly in small streets, so they’re not speeding, just making a freaky racket. If you’re in a house on one of these streets you can’t hear the tv or your own thoughts when they’re passing through. And that can be bloody often. I would previously have associated wanky car noise with ‘rough’ areas, but I’ve found it worse in naice places….

Is this a thing now? AIBU to wish they’d STFU?

I saw a hilarious YouTube video of some bellend London who had a stupidly loud exhaust - a bicycle copper told him to pull over but he drove off. Then a passer by kicked his car and he got out and ran over to the copper all “look what he did to my car” apparently totally forgetting he’d ignored the coppers signal to stop.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 01/02/2022 23:00

I am hoping these things will become hopeless passé when electric cars are more common.

D0lphine · 01/02/2022 23:01

@whysonasty

Midlife crisis mobiles. Loathe them. My neighbour had a MLC motorbike he loves to sit on and rev endlessly in his driveway.
Omg tell me about it! The revving in the driveway what the fuck???
Butterismylife · 01/02/2022 23:23

I notice the popping, farty ones but the most constant are simply large cars that chug and growl, they make a thunderous noise when they’re parking up or changing gear. Not so much boy racer as something else, I am sure they never used to be so loud.
If they pull up at lights at bottom of my street, the rumble shakes the houses.

Dunno @D0lphine, but I feel like drowning him out with Macho Man on full volume each time he does it.

I was coming on to say ‘give up sugar’ but I realise now that thread is about vehicles.

TomPinch · 02/02/2022 05:17

I'm a big fan of noisy, farty exhausts.

They tell me, being a cyclist, that an utter dickhead in a car is in my vicinity.

CaMePlaitPas · 02/02/2022 05:47

Every time I hear one I think "dickhead".

“Look at me! Look! Looooooooooook!!!!!” 🙄

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens

There is a car in my town that makes really weird noises when it changes gear, kind of like hoooOOO OOO hOOOoooo hooting/whistly kind of sound.
Dump valves? It's a dreadful noise.
FatOaf · 02/02/2022 07:11

Why would anyone want any vehicle that makes lots of noise, what's the appeal

Look at meeee! Listen to meeee! Meeee! Meeee! MEEEE!!!!!!

It's the mantra of the twenty-first century. Overgrown toddlers dressed up as adults but still demanding that everyone look and listen only to MEEEE!!!!!! Wanker cars (farting exhausts, blaring stereos, SUVs that take up four spaces in the supermarket car park) are only one symptom.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/02/2022 07:19

@Momicrone

And motorbikes, why so noisy
...and wretched cyclist tickling their bells and attaching playing cards to their bikes to make that 'brrrrughhh' noise on the spokes...

(Note: that 'brrrrughhh' noise may not be the exact sound, I'm not very good on phonetics.)

astorsback · 02/02/2022 07:39

Yep, I've noticed a big increase too.

They sound so pathetic and remind me of the Trotters' Reliant Robin.

Macshoto - Even if, as owners, you live in an isolated area, surely, you'll still be waking people up travelling from A to B throughout the day/evening? Unless you never go anywhere.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/02/2022 08:20

Actually I am certain that some of these are deliberately anti-social judging by the smirk on the face of the young bellend locally who bought and old Volvo estate in lovely condition and is busy ruining it with stickers, and unbelievably loud pop bang exhaust etc.

The backfire is unburnt fuel exploding in the exhaust so I am surprised if they are legal - not that we ever see a Police car.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/02/2022 08:21

Agree about Trotters Reliant

McT123 · 02/02/2022 08:41

Not only are these exhausts incredibly annoying, they are also illegal:

"Modified exhaust systems

It’s illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’ (checked it meets environmental and safety standards).

The police can also take action if your vehicle’s silencer doesn’t work in the way it was designed or if you’re driving in a way that creates too much noise."

Legal limit for a car exhaust is 74dB which is about the same level as a vacuum cleaner.

If you are being annoyed by a noisy exhaust you can report to the Police via 101 or to your local council.

Handsnotwands · 02/02/2022 08:42

They scare my dog. Like terrify him. Won’t anyone think of the dogs 😱

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/02/2022 08:51

Good luck with that

EvilPea · 02/02/2022 09:07

They are remapped engines with a map called a ‘popcorn’ remap.

It’s the sign of a bellend.

That car is probably a diesel that’s had it’s DPF removed.

Your optimistic. The opposite will happen when people work out how to change the noise (which they thankfully have to legally have now. You’ll be able to program it however you want, I’m hoping for a Pac-Man ‘Wacca waccca waccca’
EmmaH2022 · 02/02/2022 09:15

This has long been a bugbear of mine and I get very confused because some people tell me it's illegal

I really don't think it is. I think some cars are actually being sold with these as standard. It's not just people who have modified the exhausts.

Why are cars fitted with these? Alongside high volume steros and screens that read out bloody Tweets?

I used to love driving, I don't drive at the mo but it doesn't look fun anymore.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 02/02/2022 09:27

In that case can my car have the guinea pig noises from Pui Pui Molcar please?

You are right - as I mentioned earlier a lot of German cars are the worst offenders.

AMG Mercedes have a feature called (I am not making this up) "Emotion start" where you can set it so the car's silencers (mufflers if you are American) in the exhaust are bypassed, in order to make it extra loud at start up - this is standard. I'd have thought it migth be against EU rules, but it seems that along with retina searing headlights and bogus emission figures, it's allowed if German manufacturers want it.
