To think I'm not the one who is being unreasonable here? (Hospital parking)

My mum has an appointment later today at James Cook hospital. We were talking about parking and she said "well if I can't find a space I'll just park on the double yellow lines."

She has a blue badge so in normal circumstances she is allowed to do that but imbu to think that a busy hospital isn't the right place to do it? And iirc, the lines at James Cook are all double reds.

Also she has form for essentially just abandoning the car wherever she likes because she has the blue badge! She had three parking tickets last year and had to pay them all which is a huge waste of money when she could just park sensibly!

Not what you’re asking, but the last few times I’ve been to James Cook recently parking has not been a problem on site.

Mumofsend · 01/02/2022 12:44

Blue badge or not you can't cause qn obstruction. If she's causing on obstruction then she is being unreasonable. If not then she isnt

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/02/2022 12:45

I thought even a blue badge doesn't mean you can create an obstruction? I've seen one towed before (buses couldn't get up the road).

WeirdlyKind · 01/02/2022 12:46

Yep, I think that's why I'm so annoyed at her over it! She thinks the blue badge gives her free rein to park wherever she likes!

Blue badges can park on double yellows, but doesn't it also depend on curb markings too?

Sleepyblueocean · 01/02/2022 12:55

It depends if she is causing an obstruction although the likelihood is that in a hospital car park she would be.

MagentaRocks · 01/02/2022 13:03

As long as they aren't causing an obstruction.
Shmithecat2 · 01/02/2022 13:04

James Cook is double reds, so no one is supposed to park on them, however blue badge holders can stop on them to be dropped off. Massively selfish and irresponsible of her to abandon her car anywhere she likes on hospital grounds though.

Funkyslippers · 01/02/2022 13:14

She's lucky her car hasn't been towed away yet. That's alot more hassle and expense

Glisil · 01/02/2022 13:16

I don’t know about that hospital but the one where I work only has double red lines to prevent people from doing this.

ChangingLife · 01/02/2022 13:22

I know the hospital yu are talking aoiut. It is a nightmare. Even when using the car park (let alone having access to a disabled space) it can be impossible to find a space. I;'ve bene known to arrive 1h30 BEFORE my appointment to be sure I can park.... because basically it can be impossible to find a space any time after 10.30am.

If I was at your mum's place, I would do exactly the same.
And so does a friend of mine who regularly takes her dad for appointment.

The situation is atrocious.

ChangingLife · 01/02/2022 13:23

So @WeirdlyKind, seeing that there is a KNOWN issue with finding somehwre to park, are you going to take her to hopsital instead?

WeirdlyKind · 02/02/2022 13:27

Well, no, I wasn't able to because I had to be at work and her mobility scooter won't fit in my car anyway.

ChangingLife · 02/02/2022 13:33

So what did you expect your mum to do if there is no disabled place (any place for that matter) left?

I’m not agreeing with the dumping your car where ever you want type of behaviour. But this was a very specific situation. And in that situation, what do you think she should do?

3scape · 02/02/2022 14:28

Red lines they will just tow.

She'll just have to do what people do, drive round again, stalk for people leaving etc.

WeirdlyKind · 02/02/2022 15:41

My dad was with her and is fully insured to drive the car. He could quite easily drop her off and nip to the Toby across the road to wait!

Not sure why you're getting so arsey with me? My job means I can't just take time off at short notice (due to staffing ratios and such).

Hankunamatata · 02/02/2022 15:56

Yeah they will tow or clamp her of she just abandons on hospital grounds

Get a taxi? Park in a town/city center and get the bus from there? Get the bus the whole way if it's convenient? Leave early to give yourself time to get a space?

The same thing anybody else would do if they didn't have the self-given authority to park wherever they want?
