To give up on this job offer

HotChocolate16 · 31/01/2022 21:28

So I was offered a role in civil service last month mid December. Requested through their portal a discussion with the manager to discuss the offer. Chased this various times over the last month or so to which the recruitment email has responded a few times and said they’ve chased the hiring manager but not heard anything. I’ve still not heard from the manager. Should I give up on this job? It was a big recruitment drive of about 30 positions but still surely it wouldn’t take this long for a call back??

Do you not have contact details for the recruiting manager direct?

HotChocolate16 · 31/01/2022 21:33

Yes. They were one of the emails I chased this last month and no response. HR also chased and copied them in with no response either.

Is this HMRC by any chance?

@Octomore

Why do you ask?

No, don't give up yet, can take agesSmile

Octomore · 31/01/2022 21:45

I've had an offer from a big HMRC recruitment drive, similar timeline, and am also finding that the whole process is now insanely delayed.

burnthur5t · 31/01/2022 21:46

I had to chase a contract of employment after being offered a job. I had to ask twice

That was a warning sign I should have followed

The job was very chaotic and I was looking to leave after a couple of weeks. I eventually left after about eight months

I would proceed with caution

HotChocolate16 · 01/02/2022 08:42

Not feeling very confident about this all tbh

Passport office are being the same, my son has been going through all the checks for three months now, I understand they need to be thorough but not sure why it takes so long, he's got another job thankfully in the meantime 🤷

I work in the civil service. Recruitment takes forever trust me. Up to you if you don’t want to wait, there will be a waiting list of people to take the offer if you don’t want it

Darbs76 · 01/02/2022 08:51

Also this time of year lots of people on leave as end of leave year is 28th Feb

IncompleteSenten · 01/02/2022 08:59

It's the civil service.

By the time they've sorted out recruiting you it'll be time to retire you.

Bluesheep8 · 01/02/2022 09:16

Have you got a start date?

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 01/02/2022 09:20

Have you got other options?

I would keep looking while you wait. It's not necessarily a sign of what's to come in the job but it could be. So keep your options open. If something better comes along, take it. If not, then no harm waiting anyway. Good luck!

BigYellowHat · 01/02/2022 09:21

Don’t give up if you’re keen. Firstly, they’re recruiting 30 positions so they’re bound to be busy. Secondly, the manager could be unexpectedly absent due to sickness/bereavement etc. You’ll hear back.

jclm · 01/02/2022 09:22

Keep chasing but it is the civil service. Took me 8 months to start!!!

HotChocolate16 · 01/02/2022 09:24

I’ve not got a start date yet as wanted to discuss the offer beforehand such as part time working, so I’ve not accepted the offer yet as I requested a call from the manager.

I currently am working and still in my job, not told them I’ve applied for this yet as my acceptance of the offer depends on the Discussion I have with the manager regarding the offer. I guess I’ll just wait it out a bit longer.

Thats not standard across the CS. Where I worked, leave year started on 1 April.
CRbear · 01/02/2022 10:03

Call them? Emails are easy to ignore.

HotChocolate16 · 01/02/2022 10:29

I would call but no number!

If its a request for part time working then you need to talk to HR not the recruiting manager.

For these roles the individual teams would have put in a bid for an individual to fill a business need. And that would be for either a full time or part-time role.

So if you want part time then you need to be explicit to HR and then they will see if any of the roles are suitable.

I don't know why you need to talk to the actual team you are joining.

You just need to agree with HR when you can start

The advert was for multiple positions and stated it was suitable for part time, full time and flexible options. And the advert and offer said if you want to discuss part time working or anything then to click the option that says ‘request a discussion with manager’ before accepting any offer. Then HR pass the request to the manager. I have gone via the correct avenue.

Surely much depends on how much you would like to work for the employer? Eg the role they offer you, pay and benefits and so on.

It’s certainly poor practice by the recruiting line manager(s)!

It’s likely with a big employer that even if the manager gets in touch with job information and you agree on your working hours and so on there could be further long delays, for example security checks . Before the manager/ employer offers you a firm offer and starting date.

If you intend to continue with the role I would seek some target timescales.

Wouldn’t resign from your current job (starting any notice period) until all checks etc are completed and you have that in writing.
