To be worried about the Nat Insurance Increase?

Folicky · 31/01/2022 07:41

I work in the NHS, recently had a pay increase (not in line with inflation) and now this will come and take it away and more. I needed that increase, it gave me a bit more room rather than having money pressures. Feel very harsh despite me knowing what it is for (Covid) but then all those PPE contracts to mates. Feeling a bit shafted

edwinbear · 31/01/2022 09:34

YANBU OP. My bills will go up by about £300 pm, my pay rise is £50 pm. I'm going to have to get rid of our cleaner to fund the gap, I realise I'm fortunate to have that option, but not sure my cleaner will feel that way.

NarcissistsEyebrows · 31/01/2022 09:35

@SerendipityJane

The government could try to recoup the billions spent on unusable PPE?

Or the billions fraudulently claimed under the business recovery scheme. Except that also went to their mates.

The only answer here, is not to have a Tory government. As long as you do, all else is moot. And the only way that is going to happen is when your fellow human beings decide in enough numbers that being poor is not some moral deficiency but a combination of complex factors that can be addressed when you have the will.

Got it in one

But for some reason people still vote Tory because they think Labour are...boring? Will steal their inheritance? Are fiscally incompetent?

The Tories are all of these and a lot lot more!

dorkfink · 31/01/2022 09:36

@daimbarsatemydogsbone sorry my point was with the current system we don't have enough money. Just targeting income alone is a big problem but can't see the gov doing higher levies on 2nd properties & foreign penetration. And we do have a looming issue of an ageing population & a shrinking working one which has been exacerbated by Brexit.

dorkfink · 31/01/2022 09:37

They are looking at increasing state pension age earlier despite data showing life expectancy has stalled

SerendipityJane · 31/01/2022 09:39

Don't fall for the "not enough money" lies - we have plenty

But it's a handy excuse to hide your lack of empathy behind, isn't it ?

SerendipityJane · 31/01/2022 09:42

But for some reason people still vote Tory because they think Labour are...boring? Will steal their inheritance? Are fiscally incompetent?

If people are stupid happy enough to continue to enable a political party that bought their vote with at least 2 bare faced lies, then they can quit their whiny whinging and get with the program, They are the mugs, and they can pay for their Tory fetish with their real money.

dorkfink · 31/01/2022 09:42

I think some think they will one day have the BTL, the dividend income, the 1m inheritance so they don't want to vote for something that will disadvantage them in the future. There's a disconnect. it's like the housing market some think ever increasing prices is a good thing.

Batinhernightdress · 31/01/2022 09:46

@dorkfink

Another thing that benefits the higher earners. Whilst working office job maybe possible later in life, those in physically demanding jobs are shafted once again
edwinbear · 31/01/2022 09:49

If people do vote Labour next election though, are they really going to cut taxes? I can't see it personally. I shall probably just abstain next GE.

dorkfink · 31/01/2022 09:50

i can't see them cutting taxes but perhaps a more equal spread

becausemymumsaidso · 31/01/2022 09:52

It's all I think about. I work for the nhs too, my pay rise is 2p an hour extra, yet after N.I increasing, electric bill currently at £285 a month and rising, and we are a single income household- cheaper for my husband not to work than to pay for childcare for my unreliable shift pattern. We aren't entitled to any benefits and I work a minimum 20hours a week extra just to cover bills. We are currently just about able to afford bills so I don't know what will happen with all these rises :(

I've worked hard my whole life, only took 6 weeks maternity leave, worked 2 jobs throughout covid to help out (80+ hours a week) and it just feels like our government are shitting all over us! I despair for what's to come

CorrBlimeyGG · 31/01/2022 09:58

Introducing a tax on wealth would, in the longer term, allow for tax cuts to those on lower incomes. In the short term, little will change, because of the ridiculous amount of money the Tories have wasted on test and trace, PPE, giving out loans without performing any due diligence...

poorbuthappy · 31/01/2022 10:05

It wouldn't be quite so bad if we knew that the bloody money would actually be spent on what it should be spent on.

We pay more every year. We get less. It's a fantastic business model for those at the top, Like the best pyramid scheme ever.

fiftiesmum · 31/01/2022 10:05

It is a rare care user who will ever reach that cap

FanGirlX · 31/01/2022 10:06

Rishi could try to recover a few billion of the covid support/loans that was given out without proper checks because he screwed it up and didn't put proper checks in place.

This is an absolute scandal and heads should be rolling.

BigGreen · 31/01/2022 10:10

Totally agree with you. I woulnd't mind paying more for NHS and social care (if the money actually went to social care).

But we've wasted billions on PPE that doesn't work, shady contracts lining rich mates' pockets through the VIP lane. Now this £4BILLLION of COVID loan fraud that they're not even going to try to get back?! Confused Angry.

How about sorting all that out before you come and raid pay packets?

Many EU countries had interventions into their energy markets late last year already but not us.

Plus the Tories have messed up all the recent insulation schemes and aren't backing renewables in the way they should be (especially in light of Russia).

LadyWhistledownsPen · 31/01/2022 10:12

Yes it worries me too. I had to go part-time after maternity leave so we could reduce childcare costs so I've lost £10k a year in wages. Utilities are £164 a month now so that's going to go up. Husband works full time but we still pretty much live payday to payday. Thank goodness the mortgage is fixed

kittensinthekitchen · 31/01/2022 10:14

@lonelyapple

It's awful. Why are they taking money away from full time workers when benefits are going up by 3-4%? Where's the incentive to work more hours when you basically get told you are privileged and have money taken away. I'm not surprised so many are leaving the workforce!
Yeah those scroungers on benefits. Should be made to wear rags and scavenge for scraps.

My carers allowance is going up by £2.20 a week, which I think is one of the biggest raises I've seen. Even providing the minimum required care of 35 hours, that's 6p an hour. Though I don't know anyone in receipt of CA who only does 35 hours.

Except I have two children who require significant care, but only get one CA payment, so a raise of 3p per hour, per child.

Rolling in it 🙄

FanGirlX · 31/01/2022 10:14

It's not just petrol prices going up. We are paying more for less efficient fuel. I'm getting about 20% less mpg with the new E10. I drive a Polo, so hardly a gas guzzler.

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 10:16

@edwinbear

IF labour taxed the 171 billionaires 1% of their wealth, they would raise £59 billion, now its not that simple or easy but the fact is the Tories haven't even tried, not even a windfall tax on North Sea energy companies who have made an extra £20 billion on gas/oil price increases.

Just tax the low paid extra instead.

LakieLady · 31/01/2022 10:49

@Theworldisfullofgs

Where is the £350m a week?
Johnson spent it on cake and wine.
edwinbear · 31/01/2022 10:55

The problem with a wealth tax though, is people want to see what that would comprise of. Taxing companies like Amazon etc seems fair enough, but when they last looked at it, they were suggesting a wealth tax on people's houses and pensions at a relatively low level. If you have a valuable civil service NC pension fund and find yourself with a big tax bill because of it, that's not going to be a vote winner either.

LakieLady · 31/01/2022 10:55

This.

They're not going after the business recovery crooks or the PPE conmen, but the law-abiding rest of us are going to have to pay.

Which is actually a bit of a fib, because I'm over pension age, so don't pay NI, and it won't affect me. But I'm still bloody angry about it.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 31/01/2022 11:28

You will pay from 2023 if you are over Pension age and working.

FourTeaFallOut · 31/01/2022 11:54

Council tax can rise by any figure, energy and NI all coming at the same time

The council tax rises are capped at 3%, aren't they?
