To no longer make my bed 'properly'?

Having watched 'How Clean is Your House' BITD, I learned that you should air the bed by throwing the quilt back for as long as possible before making the bed in the usual way. Before Covid, I'd do this whilst getting ready and then make before leaving for work. However, I now simply fold the duvet down, straighten the bottom sheet and leave it at that. Am I being a slattern or is this actuallly 'healthier'?

God, I would love to leave the bed smooth but open until someone gets back into it but I do end up making it. Not until 6pm this evening but.

In my defence, dh leaves the bed needing a civil engineer to rebuild it sometimes so making the bed can be a necessity.

BagpipeBarmcake · 30/01/2022 12:09

Yeah, this is a thing apparently. DH was horrified when he moved in and found I didn't do this but just made the bed (none too precisely) as soon as we were out of it. It doesn't bother me one way or the other so now we do the airing the bed thing, except that we don't actually bother making it again, just unfolded the duvet as we get back into bed at night. This sounds a bit like what you are doing TBH so if this makes you a 'slattern' then I guess I am one too. Ho hum (not bothered by this).

PolaDeVeboise · 30/01/2022 14:39

I don't make it either, we just 'unfold', like you do, before getting in to it.

I mean 99% of the time I don't do anything with my bed, just roll out of it and roll back in at night. I don't think anyone outside of my household knows, or cares

ShirleyPhallus · 30/01/2022 14:43

Oh god are you nuts, don’t ask MN a question about bed cleanliness!!!

In reality it’s fine, but on here I’m sure someone will be along shortly to tell you that if you don’t get up in the middle of the night to change your sheets then again in the morning then you’re a dirty bitch.

dudsville · 30/01/2022 14:45

I used to air the bed. Now I don't. The shift came as a result of getting pets and not wanting them on the fitted sheet or the under side of the duvet.

Cockwomblingfree · 30/01/2022 14:53

fucking hell, is this a thing? I'm in my 50s and have managed to survive my bed without ever doing any of this faff. Nobody should be fearful of even getting into their own bed for the sake of a turndown sheet. The people telling you to do this are either trying to sell you a book, justify their fee for making a TV show about it, or own a bedlinen shop.

Vavavrrooom · 30/01/2022 14:56

I z fold our duvet back so that it’s neatly folded at the bottom of the bed then at night I just get on the bed and grab the top edge and pull so it’s made on top of me.

dynamitegirl · 30/01/2022 14:58

I tell myself that my DC have learned of this somehow and are taking it very seriously which is why their duvets spend the day on the floor and they just pick it back up when they go to bed.

gabsdot45 · 30/01/2022 14:59

I have to make my bed properly before I go downstairs in the morning. I absolutly hate unmade beds.

Dilbertian · 30/01/2022 15:04

My Mum taught us to fold the quilt back and leave the bed to air. She would remake it at some point during the day while we were at school, but we had to do it ourselves on weekends and holidays.

Pretty much what I do now with my own dc, except that the beds get remade after school so I don't make theirs. When they get remade. Because I don't always bother. As long as the bed's aired.

RandomMess · 30/01/2022 15:06

I would love to do this but we have cats and a dog that luuuuuuurve sleeping on my bed 🤮

I leave the bedroom door shut off the bed is airing, and remade the bed before leaving the door open.
TheSpottedZebra · 30/01/2022 15:07

I sort of kick it back to get out, then leave it like this all day.
I consider it airing, and believe strongly that life is too short to smooth it down all neatly later and perhaps garnish it with some little cushions.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 30/01/2022 15:10

I always air the bed for a good hour. It's better in the summer as the sun gets on the bed then.
It's also handy to reposition the electric blanket and tuck the fitted sheet in.

We've got 2 cats, but for some reason so far they prefer to sleep on a puffed up duvet rather than just on a sheet. 😹

Malariahilaria · 30/01/2022 15:14

I make it (roughly) as soon as I get up or I won't and then it'll annoy me all day. I suspect my MIL would do the airing and making later, but she irons sheets and tea towels and is horrified that I don't so, different worlds really.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/01/2022 15:21

I air it, out of bed, throw back duvet, open bedroom window wider. Go downstairs, feed cats, make tea, potter. 20 mins later, go upstairs to make bed before getting showered.
Without fail, cat 1 and cat 2 are asleep on the bottom sheet.

GrinGrinGrinGrin absolutely love this and you're spot on

They think you will want to get back in after breakfast, so are keeping it warm for you, because they love you. 😻

Yes, exactly.

I don't want the cats on my sheet.

HairyShins · 30/01/2022 15:51

I never make the bed. I think a neatly turned back duvet is as neat as a made bed. Nobody sees it anyway. Besides 99.9% of the time my husband is still on bed when I get up, and it's taken years of training to get him to put it back half, it isn't worth my sanity trying to get him to make it.

Needdoughnuts · 30/01/2022 15:57

Unless there are potential buyers viewing the property I throw back the duvet when we get up and pull it back up when we get in at night. I've always believed beds need a proper airing.

velvet24 · 30/01/2022 15:59

Yes always leave it neatly folded back to air.
