To cross the road when I see a smoker?

I really dislike smoking and find I'm extremely sensitive to the smell, so have always been very aware of smokers and will notice a smoker earlier than others do if I'm walking around a town centre etc.

Now I have a 7mo I'm particularly conscious I don't want him exposed to the smoke so I make a point of crossing the road and getting as far away as possible when I see a smoker.

Well MIL was pushing the pram earlier as I was looking after my toddler nephew and when I asked her to cross the road she refused, telling me "it doesn't even occur to anyone else so you'll be fine, stop being so anxious". Said smoker then took a huge puff just as we walked past, so we walked through a cloud of fresh smoke.

AIBU to do this / ask this?

Walking through someone's fag smoke, outside and you can still smell it?? No. No you can't

ClaymationHeartsStillBeat · 29/01/2022 17:46

It's gross. I cross the road when I see someone smoking coming closer and everyone I know pretty much steers clear of smoking. It makes me want to heave. Even when I smell it on someone's clothes.

Yes you can. And taste it.

It’s not pleasant.

You absolutely can. Every damn time.

On my coat / hair / pram etc

What a load of bollocks!

Do you not wash your hair then?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 29/01/2022 17:47

@BurntToastAgain yes as you walk through it. It's not on their pissing clothes for days. Utter bullshit

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 29/01/2022 17:49

It's a failed quote. It doesn't stay on the ops clothes and hair for days.

@user1498572889

Why don’t you wear perfume or deodorant since covid??
Working from home / not going out as much meant I felt able to try it

Why would you want to try not wearing deodorant Confused

Georgyporky · 29/01/2022 18:00

I'd avoid someone not using deodorant !

RebeccaCloud9 · 29/01/2022 18:03

I wouldn't cross the road because of the danger of smoke exposure, but I would do it for the smell. So gross. But these days, so few people actually so smoke, it's much less of an issue than it ever used to be.

RozHuntleysStump · 29/01/2022 18:05

I do the same. It’s a massive migraine trigger and so bloody selfish.

BurntToastAgain · 29/01/2022 18:08

I guess that might depend on someone’s sensitivity.

I wouldn’t smell it says later. But I’d still much prefer not to have to walk through it at all.

CornishGem1975 · 29/01/2022 18:13

Probably OTT and I wouldn't go to those lengths but I'm with you on the vile vile smell. I'm quite sensitive to the smell of smoke too, it's just the grossest thing.

BluebellsareBlue · 29/01/2022 18:19

Why would that make you unreasonable? Overly anxious perhaps, and I doubt very much if you pass a smoker your smelling it on your clothes hair and pram for days, wash your hair, wash your clothes and wipe down the pram Hmm

Because not everyone needs deodorant? I do. DP doesn't.
