to have been really cross with a jeweller?

OK - my DH bought me a lovely and not inexpensive watch for Christmas. It was slightly too large and so we popped in today to have a couple of links taken out (from the shop he bought it from). The man refused because we didn't have the guarantee or proof of purchase and said that if I brought that he would do it. Otherwise he would charge me.

I went a bit shouty (DH left as he hates a "scene") (!) - admittedly not the best way to deal with things (only defence - teething 10 month old so I haven't had much sleep for about 5 nights) but I shouted at the bloke, said it was ridiculous, that they are the only shop in the area that stocks the damned watch anyway so where else did DH get it from? And, of course, the usual "I won't be shopping here anymore!" (not that I would've anyway as they have one lot of nice watches and the rest is tat).

So.

DH was mightily embarrassed, says that I was being unreasonable. The shouting wasn't my finest moment, but I really felt that they should've just taken the links out. It wasn't as though I was requesting a new strap or a refund or anything.

To prove to myself that I wasn't being unreasonable I called into Ernest Jones, explained that I needed a couple of links taking out. They were lovely, explained that they didn't stock my particular watch so didn't usually deal with watches they didn't stock, but had a look anyway. Took the links out, no charge, smiles all round. I even offered to pay and she said "no no - all part of the service". Clearly not all part of the service 2 doors down.

So I don't think I was BU but just wanted to have a winge about the miserable jewellers anyway.

Google Review is your new friend. I am a business owner and would never condone slating an independent business...but he kind of deserves it . Maybe mention in the review how fantastic EJ are 😁

I'm not especially tall, Crayon. But then, he was exceptionally short. And showing off for his pimply little saturday girl. Who would do better getting a saturday job at Ernest Jones!

Can't believe you are getting so much support on this thread. Shouting at a shop assistant is absolutely never ok. And then you go onto make nasty remarks about his appearance and that of his colleague.
You should have returned with your proof of purchase as he asked.
Being tired is no excuse either. You have no idea what might have been going on in his life.
He probably wanted proof of purchase because his independent business is being forced under by Ernest Jones.

flamingogold · 11/11/2022 06:35

I'm sure the shopkeeper has got over it (and probably retired) since this was originally posted in 2007.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2022 06:36

Was this an independent jeweller?

I know you think it was something he could “just” do. But as a business owner i could fill my whole days with “could you just…” jobs.

I certainly wouldn’t “just” do something for someone who shouted at me.

I realise it’s annoying but you lost the moral high ground a bit op.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2022 06:37

Zombie thread dammit 😡

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/11/2022 06:42

The OP had probably got some sleep since this happened as the ten month old baby in her post is now fifteen 😂😂

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2022 06:46

I reckon it must’ve been revived by the PR team at Earnest Jones in time for Christmas 😬

Can MNHQ unZombie it?

Daisychainsx · 11/11/2022 06:56

I worked in a small independent jewellers for a few months earlier this year. If we had changed everyone's links free of charge it would have amounted to about 1-2 hours of staff time per day. You've no idea how many people come in with these small requests that they expect to be done for free. If the watch was purchased with us we would do the links for free of course, I usually just asked 'did you buy it with us?', and if the answer was yes and it was one we stocked I'd change it without a receipt. However the cost otherwise was €3-€5... assuming it was a similar tiny charge I'd have just paid it rather than shouting. The jeweller sounds like a bit of a grump, but times are tough and he's just protecting his business.

Also, it's super easy to take links out yourself at home in case you need to in future, you can buy a little tool on amazon for less than a fiver! Same with the tools to take the back off and change the battery - so much cheaper to do it yourself!

PalePurplePinkPetal · 11/11/2022 06:56

YABU to shout at anyone.
Just because you didn’t get what you wanted.
And most places would ask for proof of purchase or charge a fee, before embarking on work.

MissMaple82 · 11/11/2022 07:02

A receipt or bank statement I'd.proof of purchase

AlexCabot · 11/11/2022 07:03

ZOMBIE ALERT

phishy · 11/11/2022 07:05

Zombie but the OP was an utter disgrace.

What an awful, smug attitude from her. If you’re reading this, I hope your watch broke.

PopcornChewingGum · 11/11/2022 07:07

YANBU but as one who gets very shouty, very quickly, I've learned the hard way that the shouter never wins, no matter how righteous her cause. I just always come away feeling bad when I've become irate. Sympathies OP - put it down to experience and to no sleep.

PopcornChewingGum · 11/11/2022 07:08

Oh just saw the zombie alert. WTF?

Why is it apparently OK to make fun of exceptionally short guys?

mum of short DS

Same here. I can't believe how people on mn thinks it's ok to body shame short men like this. His height has absolutely nothing to do with the situation.

Mmmmpavlova · 11/11/2022 07:38

I can only assume that MN was a different place in 2007 as I don't think OP would have been hailed as a hero had this been posted today. What a horrible post and surprising set of responses she got!

Anyway sorry for contributing to a zombie....

rwalker · 11/11/2022 07:46

So you went to the shop with a watch u could of bought anywhere and demanded free work
then shouted when they wouldn’t do it

absolutely reasonable to ask for proof of purchase

EJ surprised they did it because if they would of scratched/damaged it they would of been liable

thank fuck I don’t work in retail any more

JuneOsborne · 11/11/2022 07:49

Wow,. That poster has set a ton of old threads off, haven't they?

OldReliable · 11/11/2022 07:51

The guy is just doing his job. It's up to him if he doesn't want to do work for free.

I wouldn't work in retail these days. Nobody deserves to get shouted at for doing his job.
