I start a new job in a few weeks and I’m already feeling nervous! I’ve been with my current employer about ten years and I hate change!! But I find myself feeling drained with my current role, approx 1 hour commute each way, have to be in the office everyday, frequent events of an evening. I’ve got an opportunity closer by, hybrid working and a fresh challenge, which I’m really excited about but nervous!
Has anyone got any tips of things I could do in the lead up to starting to prepare myself? Or things to do / not do during my first three months there for example ? How does everyone else feel when starting a new job?!

Just giving it a bit of a bump! Even though it’s a few weeks away still I am feeling pretty nervous already ! Any tips / good stories from people recently starting new jobs would be much appreciated!

My first change of job after a lengthy period was a bit nerve racking, the second and subsequent ones not so much. You are moving for good reasons so be positive, imagine yourself there and doing well. Maybe a call to your manager the week before to confirm joining arrangements, anything you need for day 1/week 1. Make the most of any induction - there will be things you don't know (and don't know you don't know), that is completely normal. Try not to keep saying "where I worked we used to do it like this" - very annoying to new team. There is a time and place for suggestions, good ideas when you have had time to see how existing arrangements work. And good luck, sounds like a great opportunity.

Hi,

I started a new job in October 2021 after nearly 10 years in my previous job. I was so worried and anxious before starting the now role and kept thinking I was going to fail or I had made a huge mistake. I had a few wobbles while in training too as I had so much to learn. However, I have now settled into my new role and I'm really happy there.

My tips for you are as follows:

  1. Keep in mind why you left your old job (especially when you have a wobble).
  2. Ask lots of questions in training or just in general in the first few weeks.
  3. Give yourself time to settle in and get used to the role. You will have good and bad days in the beginning but you will eventually get used to it.
  4. Think of what you want to achieve from this role and how it will help you with any future goals.

Good luck I'm sure you will be great.

Really great tips above.
Just don’t be hard on yourself when you begin. When you’ve been in a role for a decade like you have, you can more or less do your job in your sleep. When you begin a new role there’s new things to learn, new people and their way of doing things. Go really easy on yourself and expect yourself to be a liability for a while and realise it is normal…and expected.
I know my struggle is going into a new workplace and feeling incompetent. I get total imposter syndrome. Just get through those first few weeks and it’ll get easier and hopefully you will thrive! Good luck, you’ll be amazing I’m sure. They picked you for a reason.
