I watched Its a Sin and I really think I am so similar to Valerie Tozer. I can see that she is Unlikeable but I can’t really pinpoint what she is doing that is so wrong (until the end obvs).
My children are still young, but how do I foster a relationship that is more like Jill and her parents than Valerie and Ritchie?
I do not have a good relationship with my parents so do not have a role model to look to.

Haha OP love the thread title 😂 and such an interesting topic - definitely food for thought.

It’s A Sin was such a brilliant series, wasn’t it! It’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever seen on TV - so well done and memorable.

Hmm I think Valerie’s character came across as quite bigoted and ignorant about her children’s lives. Richie was quite conflicted about the fact he was gay, and I think his lack of connection and closeness with his parents was one of the reasons why he didn’t feel like he could tell his mum (or dad) he was gay.

Also, It’s A Sin is set in the 80s, so a very different time to now, and I think parenting styles have changed quite a bit since then.

I suppose a good way to encourage a healthy, fun relationship with your kids is to be open with them and to encourage them to be open with you about their feelings. Just dropping in my two pennies’ worth! (I don’t actually have kids yet, so I’m definitely not best placed to make suggestions on this anyway!)
