Destinations that turned out to be surprisingly good

Salamanca. On a trip through Spain we randomly stopped there for a night at Salamanca and loved it. Inexpensive bars and restaurants, lots of locals, no tourist hotspots — so much so that we spent the day looking round and stayed a second night.

Cardiff. A lovely, bustling, buzzy city with a beautiful river, park, castle, shopping, cafes and a harbour and history. I'd gone for the weekend to visit an old friend, ended up moving there.

Lucca. So beautiful and lots to do and see.

wombat, I worry a bit for your blood pressure.

Agree Wroclaw is lovely

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 30/01/2022 18:21

@RedRec

Llandudno. Not another dreary seaside town but gorgeous, and sort of majestic. There is another post on here about moments of pure happiness, which is what I felt when I saw the beautiful curved seafront at Llandudno for the first time.
We went there last year....what a huge surprise we got - l expected some sleepy little Welsh village but it was bustling!!

I agree - so much character. You could almost imagine elegant ladies with bustles and parasols strolling along the sea front (although maybe that's just me....)

Batholemubrecht · 30/01/2022 18:45

Gdansk. Like Amsterdam but close to the sea. Gorgeous architecture, lots of history (tragic but rebirth too after being bombed the crap out of).
Zante. £99 holiday but hired a bike and moped, visited some beautiful lush countryside out in the sticks.
Also want to visit Krakow and Wroclaw.

ScribblingPixie · 30/01/2022 18:48

Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre - one of the most interesting museums I've been to in the UK. I still think about the trawlerman/guide's stories of sailing the Arctic as a 16-year-old.

RampantIvy · 30/01/2022 18:51

I have always wanted to go there @ScribblingPixie. Is it still open?

JuergenSchwarzwald · 30/01/2022 19:11

The OP asked for destinations that were surprisingly good. As in, foreign destinations that are little visited by tourists but with a surprising amount to offer, or U.K. cities that people wouldn’t consider visiting as a tourist but are actually great fun and more attractive than you would think

that's your interpretation of it. another interpretation is "I wasn't keen before I went but I was pleasantly surprised". Which could relate to anywhere.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 30/01/2022 19:14

I feel the same way about Birmingham and Cardiff. My god anyone who thinks those places are wonderful needs to get out more

I can't comment about Birmingham but if you think Cardiff is a dump, you haven't actually been there. Actually most places have good points. I remember thinking Newport was a dump as I spent more time than I would like at its railway station. Actually it's not bad at all and places like Caerleon are just up the road. I've also spent more hours than I would like at Reading station and thought that was a dump, but again, it's got more going for it than you'd think.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 30/01/2022 19:16

As if crowds would make e.g. Abu Simbel less impressive

Crowds absolutely make somewhere less impressive. in fact they make places unvisitable. I prefer lesser known places or at least places not (as) packed with tourists. So for example Bologna over Florence. Or Hamburg over Paris.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 30/01/2022 19:19

@SudaneseHipHopFan

Copenhagen, so so pretty. Amazing food. Amazing shops with the most beautiful displays. Very friendly.
Yes Copenhagen is really great. I went in 2000 and the weather was rubbish and although it was enjoyable it didn't really wow me. But I went back in 2018 and it was a revelation. One of the nicest places I've been to.

@Iamthewombat

Gosh your posts are rude.

Yes, they are. Write daft things and people will laugh at you. It’s a rule of life.

The OP asked for destinations that were surprisingly good. As in, foreign destinations that are little visited by tourists but with a surprising amount to offer, or U.K. cities that people wouldn’t consider visiting as a tourist but are actually great fun and more attractive than you would think.

Predictably, a load of people have read the OP and thought, well, I don’t really have a response that fits the question but I really want to talk about myself and/or boast about my exotic travels. Thus I will mention that I have seen dawn breaking over the pyramids, or that the Grand Canyon took my breath away, or that one of the most visited cities in Europe, stuffed full of historical jewels (York) was ‘surprisingly good’ because it’s got, er, a wall and a river. Or that Venice is beautiful. Or I might just hijack the thread to inform everyone that the university I attended is ‘really good’ even when it isn’t, because somebody mentioned the city it is in.

Because all of the places I listed by name in the previous paragraph are so little regarded by tourists that any visitor would be pleasantly surprised.

When, unsurprisingly, this disingenuous nonsense is laughed at, the response is either (1) you’re so rude and cruel, why won’t you just let me get on with boasting about my travels? or (2) er, what I really meant was, I thought that [insert name of world heritage site here] would be rubbish because of being crowded but it wasn’t, all right?

As if crowds would make e.g. Abu Simbel less impressive. Although somebody upthread said that Cardiff was rubbish because of the rain, so nothing would surprise me.

Thank you for your conscientious work as thread police. Here's your badge 🥇

Yes I went there, yes it's a dump, sorry you find that so difficult to accept.

@LrainIsGone

Bangkok. We were only supposed to spend a day there before flying to one of the islands but we surprisingly loved it so much we extended the stay by another couple days and went back a second time for a week.

The coast of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa - Margate, Ballito, St Lucia etc. Just beautiful & lush. The food and people are amazing!

Tell us as about Bangkok please. What did you do??
Pluvia · 30/01/2022 20:39

@sweetbellyhigh

You sound very bad-tempered

I don't tolerate fools, certainly.

Thanks, Wombat. You were right, I was hoping for some stories of places that people had set off to expecting the worst, only to be very pleasantly surprised. Surely anyone who's taken the trouble to get themselves to the Grand Canyon or Angkor Wat or the pyramids at Giza won't have left home expecting the worst and consoling themselves that it would soon all be over?

Thank you everyone who participated in the spirit in which this thread as intended, in particular, to all the people who've mentioned cities such as Munich and Maastricht and Palma and Montpelier, and for inspiring me to look to Poland and and beyond. Where once I might have raised a 'Really?' eyebrow, now I'm keen.

And if you're ever in hitting distance of Hereford, do go and say hello to the Mappa Mundi for me.

People do go to very famous places even when they don't really want to, probably mainly because loved ones are keen, but I expect there are other reasons too. I have heard nothing but negative tales of trips to Egypt so unlikely to go, but if my DH was really desperate to visit I probably would. He's previously been to places that fascinate me but aren't of much interest to me so it would only be fair. I would definitely be expecting the worst though and expect to be counting the days down to the return flight. If I then enjoyed the trip I'd certainly count that as surprising.

MrsAvocet · 30/01/2022 21:02

Aren't of much interest to him sorry

Pluvia · 30/01/2022 21:09

Oh c'mon. Stop quibbling. That wasn't the spirit of the thread and you know it. Time to stop digging and decide which of these wonderful places to visit next.

Has anyone been to Fanes on Rhodes? We're considering booking a villa there for our holidays, and I'm hoping it will be an undiscovered gem.

I've stayed in Lindos and Rhodes Town, but this will be a nice place. It looks charming.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/01/2022 21:27

New place, not nice place, though obviously I'm hoping it'll be that too!

Topofthepop · 30/01/2022 21:45

Frankfurt was nicer than I expected it to be.

Cairo was much worse! Horrible place.

GettingStuffed · 30/01/2022 21:49

I'm going out a limb and I'm going to say Bolton. OK it's not the prettiest place but it has friendly people, good restaurants and pubs. It's a great base for touring lancs, and a day trip to the the lake district

Not the Grand Canyon... :-D
ExhaustedMumma · 30/01/2022 22:06

I feel I should step in and defend Birmingham. We moved here in 2011 and I admit I had very low expectations. It’s exceeded them and then some - we live in a lovely conservation area with a friendly sense of community, there are excellent restaurants, theatres and generally good amenities, outstanding schools. Since Covid the city centre has struggled a bit but there’s been some smart developments and work is continuing prior to the commonwealth games. It’s both worth a visit and is a great place to live. Yes there are grotty bits but also lovely ones.

mumofEandE · 30/01/2022 22:08

Belfast
Went with low expectations but was blown away with it!
